Her Story
About Laura
Laura Gist is an Educational Diagnostician with extensive experience in education, special education, speech and communication, and international teaching. She currently works with Austin Independent School District and Liberty Hill ISD in Texas, supporting students and educators through educational assessment and special education services. Her work includes identifying learning disabilities, reviewing educational reports and individualized education plans, and collaborating with parents, students, teachers, speech therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and school psychologists. Her career reflects approximately 25 years of experience across multiple areas of education.
Before moving into educational diagnostics, Laura developed a diverse background that included speech therapy, early childhood education, art, music, and special education. She spent nine years working as a speech therapist in schools and also gained significant international teaching experience, including work at international schools in the Philippines and Italy. Her international background includes teaching early childhood and third-grade students, providing her with broad experience working with children from different educational and cultural environments. She has also worked in Texas public schools, including in special education roles supporting students in self-contained classrooms.
Laura's professional philosophy is grounded in hard work, determination, lifelong learning, and a commitment to helping others. She holds an undergraduate degree in Communication Disorders and a master's degree from Texas State University at San Marcos and has obtained the National Certification of Educational Diagnosticians. She is also a member of the Texas Education Diagnostician Association. Laura believes that integrity, honesty, and empathy are essential to her work, and she is particularly committed to helping build strong educational foundations for children and their families. Her interests in photography, traveling, and the outdoors complement her curiosity and appreciation for learning and different perspectives.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to hard work, determination, and a genuine desire to help others who are in need. I believe in never giving up and continuing to push forward, while also committing myself to lifelong learning and professional development. I strive to lead by example and make a positive difference through the work I do.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have received is, “The more you know, the more you grow.” I believe it is important to have structure, stay organized, continue learning, and remain true to who you are. I also believe that each person should strive to make a meaningful difference every day.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women to be proud of themselves and their accomplishments and never allow themselves to be intimidated by others. Know your worth, recognize the value you bring, and have confidence in your abilities and achievements.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I see an important opportunity to continue supporting Austin, Texas ISD programs and contributing to a better future for children and their families. Through education, assessment, and continued support for students and families, we can help build stronger educational foundations and create opportunities for children to succeed.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, honesty, and empathy are the values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life. I believe in building a strong foundation for children so they can grow, develop their abilities, and take the necessary steps toward a strong and prosperous future.
