Her Interview
Ten minutes with Leah
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my desire to make a meaningful impact. I have always been motivated by the belief that my skills, abilities, and talents can benefit individuals and systems. My drive to help improve others' quality of life and affect change has been a major source of motivation throughout my career. Along with the personal perspective and resilience I have developed as a single mother.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I have received is to allow myself to feel afraid while still being willing to move forward. I believe it is important to understand how to take calculated risks rather than allowing fear to prevent change. Taking that first step often creates momentum and makes it easier to continue moving forward.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women entering the mental health field to remain open to learning from different therapists, perspectives, and therapeutic approaches. During graduate school and clinical internships, I recommend being a sponge—taking advantage of as many training opportunities as possible and learning from a variety of professionals. I believe the strongest therapists draw from multiple modalities and experiences to develop a therapeutic framework that works authentically for them and their clients.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the challenges I see in the field is navigating relationships and processes involving insurance companies. At the same time, there are meaningful opportunities to expand the ways mental health professionals contribute to the field. My own opportunities have included consulting for an AI therapy journal, participating in crisis response following a mass shooting event, and serving as a clinical supervisor for social workers in Nevada.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Ethics and integrity are especially important to me in both my professional and personal life. I believe that acting ethically and maintaining integrity are essential to building trust. I also value being direct and upfront in my communication because clear communication reinforces trust and relational security.
