Her Story

About LisaMarie

I've been in residential property management since 1988, dedicating 37 years to this industry. I serve on the executive board where we meet once a month for manager's meetings, and I provide a lot of input on educational requirements and different types of events to help other managers get their CEU credits. I'm a Community Association Institute (CAI) member and am joining the Treasure Coast group for CEI. In my work, I believe in bringing more than just professional expertise - I like to bring a ray of sunshine to my team, the boards I work with, and my vendors. I believe in the power of kindness and making someone's day better, even through a phone conversation. After being out of the industry for two years as a cancer survivor, I returned in July of last year and now work at Signature Property Management. I've learned that time management is crucial in this field, and I recommend new managers create spreadsheets with action items for each property, focusing on the top 5 projects and keeping boards updated. I also believe it's important not to take things personally and to bring humanity back into the board relationships, especially since COVID has made things more challenging with everyone wanting immediate satisfaction.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to the incredible mentors and supporters I've had throughout my career. Kelly Burgess, one of the partners at Signature Property Management where I work now, has been there for me since 2017 as both a personal and professional mentor. I give her so much love and credit for how she developed me in this business. Another key person is Francesca Falciano, who is also in property management. When I was going through my cancer treatments, she was there for me every single morning for six weeks, lifting me up and encouraging me. I had to go every day back to work right after my treatments, and she was there. Having people who support you not just professionally but personally, through the toughest times, makes all the difference in your success.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Time management is absolutely critical. We're selling time in this industry. I highly recommend a new manager coming aboard create a spreadsheet for herself or him and provide an action item to separate - if she has a portfolio, she's going to need action items for each of her properties. Work on the top 5 projects. Go to your boards and ask them, they probably have a litany of projects going on right now, but ask them what are your 5 top projects? That's what you work on, and that's what you update your board members on as well. And here's something really important: don't take anything personal. Board members look at us as we are just doing their job for them, and we're getting paid to do a job, but if we can also help and bring a little bit of humanity into the board, because that's also kind of missing now. It's been really rough since COVID - everybody wanting to have immediate satisfaction, and now that we've had Zoom, it's been very hard for new managers.
