About Luz
Luz Virgen is a seasoned aerospace engineering leader with more than three decades of experience advancing reliability, maintainability, and operational excellence across the aviation and commercial space industries. As Reliability Engineering Manager at Virgin Galactic, she leads the Reliability, Maintainability, and Serviceability (RMS) team, overseeing the full lifecycle of reliability engineering for the company's space vehicles. Her work focuses on optimizing fleet performance, supporting inspection and maintenance programs, and helping prepare next-generation spacecraft for safe and efficient operations. Holding a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara, Luz combines deep technical expertise with a passion for building high-performing engineering organizations.
Before joining Virgin Galactic, Luz built an exceptional 34-year career at Boeing, where she held progressively senior leadership positions spanning reliability engineering, avionics, fleet health monitoring, digital transformation, analytics, program management, and customer support. Her multidisciplinary background enabled her to lead complex engineering initiatives, improve aircraft reliability, implement predictive analytics, and drive large-scale process improvements for both commercial and defense aerospace programs. Throughout her career, she has been recognized not only for her technical capabilities but also for her strategic leadership, commitment to innovation, and ability to mentor and develop engineering talent.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Luz is a dedicated advocate for STEM education, diversity, and the advancement of women and underrepresented communities in engineering. An immigrant from Mexico who built a distinguished engineering career in the United States, she actively mentors students through organizations such as SHPE, Great Minds in STEM, and MESA, while participating in outreach initiatives that inspire future engineers. A recipient of the Great Minds in STEM Lifetime Achievement Award and the Women of Color Conference Rising Star Award, Luz is widely respected for her leadership, community service, and unwavering commitment to creating opportunities for the next generation of aerospace professionals.

Diverse skill set allowing movement between areas during reductions in force, performing well, volunteering to coach, and community involvement through mentoring and workshops.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice was given by a former manager; "Diversify your technical skills and lead with courage, inclusion, embrace diversity of thought ."
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Mental health first, take one step at a time, come to work focused to learn, volunteer and do extra to learn from others, perform well as promotions are based on performance not just seniority.
