Maegan Bermudez serves as Deputy Clerk of Courts for Walworth County, where she manages case files, provides courtroom support, handles public inquiries about filing requirements, schedules hearings, collects fees, and processes legal documents such as summons and subpoenas while coordinating with judges, attorneys, and law enforcement. After a decade working as a certified nursing assistant, including four and a half years providing private care and advocacy for an individual with disabilities, she transitioned into the legal field by earning a paralegal studies degree with a 3.98 GPA through a fully online, self-directed program. Bermudez is now pursuing her bachelor's degree in paralegal studies and has earned additional credentials including Clio Certified Administrator status and certifications in legal AI fundamentals along with continuing legal education credits. She belongs to the Paralegal Association of Wisconsin and serves as secretary and treasurer for a local Cub Scout troop committee.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to perseverance, a commitment to lifelong learning, and the belief that it’s never too late to become the person you’re capable of being.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve ever received was that there is never a perfect time to chase your goals. If you keep waiting for life to slow down, you’ll be waiting forever.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
If I could give one piece of advice to a young woman entering the legal field, it would be this: never stop learning.
The law is constantly evolving, and no one expects you to know everything on day one. Ask questions. Take notes. Be curious. The people who grow the most aren’t always the ones who have all the answers. They’re the ones who are willing to learn.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest opportunities in the legal field right now is the rapid advancement of legal technology and artificial intelligence. We’re seeing tools that can summarize documents, assist with legal research, automate routine tasks, and improve efficiency in ways that weren’t possible just a few years ago.
At the same time, I think it’s one of our biggest challenges.
AI has the potential to make legal services more accessible and allow legal professionals to spend more time on complex work that requires critical thinking and human judgment. But it also raises important questions about accuracy, ethics, confidentiality, and ensuring that technology complements professional expertise rather than replaces it.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that guide both my work and personal life are integrity, service, perseverance, and continuous growth.
I believe in doing the right thing, treating others with respect, and serving my community with purpose. Returning to college at 34 while raising three children reinforced the value of perseverance and showed me that it’s never too late to pursue your goals. I also believe in lifelong learning and embracing new opportunities, especially as technology continues to shape the legal profession.
Above all, I hope to lead by example and show my children that success is built through hard work, character, and a commitment to keep growing.

Your Timeline Does Not Determine Your Potential
If you had asked me ten years ago where I thought I'd be today, I never would have said I'd be starting a career in the legal field in my mid-thirties.
Like many people, my path wasn't a straight line.
From Caregiving to the Factory Floor
After high school, I became a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA). I genuinely enjoyed taking care of people. There was something fulfilling about knowing that even the smallest acts of kindness could make someone's day a little easier. It was hard work, but it mattered.
Eventually, life changed, and so did my priorities. I left healthcare and went to work in a factory. Like so many families, we had bills to pay and financial responsibilities that never seemed to stop growing. It was the practical decision.
For two years, I worked hard, but I never felt fulfilled. Every day revolved around production numbers.
Work faster. Make more. Repeat tomorrow.
I remember thinking, Is this really it?
I wasn't looking down on the work because it was honest work, and it provided for my family. But I couldn't ignore the feeling that I wanted more than simply clocking in and clocking out. I wanted to use my mind. I wanted to challenge myself. I wanted to build a career that gave me a sense of purpose.
Staying Home, Showing Up
Then my youngest daughter was born, and I made the decision to stay home.
For four years, my days were filled with school drop-offs, baseball practices, games, band concerts, homework, laundry, meal planning, and everything else that comes with raising three children. Those years are something I will always treasure. Being present for my children was one of the greatest privileges of my life.
During that time, my son joined Cub Scouts. Like many parents, I started by simply showing up to support him. Before long, I found myself volunteering as the committee secretary and later taking on the role of treasurer as well.
I discovered that leadership doesn't always come from a job title. Sometimes it starts with simply saying, "I'll help."
Even though I loved being home with my children, I couldn't ignore the feeling that there was still something I wanted to accomplish for myself. For years, I wondered if I had missed my opportunity. I hadn't gone straight into a professional career after high school. I questioned whether I had waited too long. I wondered if I was too old to start over.
At 34, I Decided Fear Wasn't Going to Make My Decisions Anymore
I enrolled in college.
I chose a self-directed, fully online paralegal program because it gave me the flexibility my family needed. It also meant there were no scheduled class times to keep me accountable. The responsibility was entirely on me.
I took six classes every semester because I wanted to finish my degree in two years.
As if school and raising three children weren't enough, I also took on a weekend job as a server. It wasn't glamorous, but it helped support my family while I worked toward something bigger. Looking back, I realize those weekends taught me just as much about determination as my classes did.
There were days when I worked a serving shift, came home to take care of my family, and stayed up late finishing assignments. There were assignments completed between chores, discussion posts written after bedtime, and quizzes squeezed into the small moments I could find. There were plenty of nights when I wondered if I had taken on too much.
But quitting was never going to get me where I wanted to be.
One assignment became one completed class.
One class became another semester.
One semester became graduation.
I earned my Associate of Applied Science degree in Paralegal Studies.
Not long afterward, I accepted a position as a Deputy Clerk of Courts.
Every Chapter Gave Me Something
When I look back now, I don't see a collection of unrelated jobs.
I see preparation.
Being a CNA taught me compassion. Working in manufacturing taught me discipline and perseverance. Motherhood taught me patience, organization, flexibility, and how to remain calm when everything around me felt chaotic. Serving tables taught me humility, resilience, and the value of hard work. Volunteering with Cub Scouts taught me leadership and the importance of serving my community.
Every chapter gave me something I would need for the next one.
For a long time, I thought success meant getting everything right the first time. I thought successful people had a clear plan and followed it from beginning to end.
Now I know success looks very different.
- Sometimes success is choosing to start over.
- Sometimes success is enrolling in college at 34.
- Sometimes success is believing in yourself before you have any proof that everything will work out.

If there is one thing I hope another woman takes away from my story, it is this:
Your timeline does not determine your potential.
Maybe you're raising children.
Maybe you're working a job that pays the bills but leaves you feeling unfulfilled.
Maybe you've convinced yourself that you've waited too long to pursue the career you've always wanted.
You haven't.
Your experiences are not detours.
They are preparation.
The road to where you're meant to be may not look the way you expected, but that doesn't make it any less meaningful.
I am proud of where I am today—not because I took the perfect path, but because I kept moving forward even when the path was uncertain.
The best decision I ever made wasn't choosing a career.
It was deciding that I was still capable of writing a new chapter.
