Her Story

About Marissa

I've been in the fitness industry for about 4 years, starting in 2022 as a personal trainer before moving into leadership as a manager at my gym. I eventually left to pursue freelance personal training and decided to go back to school to get my master's in digital media management from the University of Southern California. That master's degree really gave me the tactical skills to navigate the field and switch directions in my career, allowing me to combine my two passions. Now, as a creative director for a personal training gym, my day-to-day work is incredibly varied. I still train clients to keep my toes wet, but I also run all of the marketing for our company, help bring in leads, maintain the website, schedule and coordinate community events, manage our merchandise, and oversee pretty much anything related to our brand voice that people see. My most notable achievement so far has been building up the brand voice of my company from the ground up - this company started last June and nobody knew about it, but now pretty much everyone in our area on the Upper West Side in Manhattan knows about us because we've created such a strong brand voice and community. I'm the kind of person that practices what I preach - I work out daily and try my best to set a good example for my clients, so I really stand behind what my company is trying to do.

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say to take the leap and pursue opportunities that maybe you do not feel equipped for, and figure it out as you go. I have learned that a lot of personal training and marketing is fake it till you make it, and you truly just do work by putting yourself in uncomfortable positions.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I would say fitness itself can be a challenging industry to break through in because there's so much different information going at people. One of the biggest things that we have to understand as personal trainers and running a personal training business is that people will not pursue personal training or fitness if they are not ready to do so. So it takes a lot of patience and a lot of dedication to find those people who are ready for change and ready for the help that we provide.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I would say I am definitely the kind of person that practices what I preach. I work out on the daily and try my best to set a good example for my clients, so I really stand behind what my company is trying to do, and I think that that definitely impacts my work. For me, fitness is both a hobby and work - my hobbies are just being active. I got into running last year, and I also enjoy being creative on the side when it comes to creative work beyond the work stuff, like painting and trying anything new out when it comes to creative stuff like that.
