Mary Hartwell is a recognized leader in AI governance, data governance, and enterprise data transformation with nearly three decades of experience helping global organizations build trusted, scalable, and business-driven governance programs. Throughout her career, she has successfully established enterprise data governance initiatives from the ground up at major organizations, including Syniti, IBM, United Technologies, II-VI Incorporated, and Axiall Corporation. Known for combining strategic vision with operational execution, Hartwell has led large-scale SAP S/4HANA transformations, master data management (MDM) initiatives, and AI readiness programs that enable organizations to improve data quality, accelerate digital transformation, and confidently adopt emerging technologies. Her expertise has earned her industry recognition, including the 2026 Data Governance Award, and she is widely respected as an author and thought leader on AI governance, data literacy, and enterprise data strategy.

As the former Global Practice Lead for Data Governance at Syniti, Hartwell unified a global governance practice spanning multiple regions while developing go-to-market strategies, advisory services, and delivery methodologies that positioned governance as a strategic enabler of AI and business transformation. She has built high-performing teams, established governance councils and operating models, and advised Fortune 500 organizations on integrating governance into enterprise operations. Her philosophy is centered on the belief that successful AI initiatives begin with trusted, governed data, making governance not simply a compliance function but the essential infrastructure for innovation, analytics, and long-term business value. Her articles and insights have been featured in publications such as NODE Magazine, the Syniti Blog, Connectivity for IR, and TechNovice, where she continues to advocate for responsible AI and data-first strategies.

Today, Hartwell is the founder of Hartwell & Co., a woman-owned advisory practice dedicated to helping organizations strengthen AI readiness, data governance, and enterprise data management. Through executive advisory, strategic planning, and governance consulting, she partners with business leaders to develop sustainable governance frameworks that align people, processes, and technology with measurable business outcomes. A graduate of Mount Aloysius College with a Bachelor of Business Administration, she also studied Electrical Engineering Technology at Penn State University. Hartwell remains actively engaged in the professional community through organizations such as the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), the Data Governance Professionals Organization (DGPO), EDM Council, DAMA International, and ISACA, where she continues to contribute to the advancement of governance excellence and responsible AI adoption.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to hard work, determination, and staying goal-driven. I lead by example, pay close attention to detail, and value open and honest communication. Most importantly, I strive to make a positive difference every day.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is to stay determined and pursue my goals and dreams without letting obstacles stand in my way. I’ve also learned the importance of being a strong team leader and a good listener, while continuously building a solid foundation through lifelong learning and personal growth.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to stay focused, remain motivated, and bring a positive attitude to your team. Be open to learning from others, continue investing in your education, and build a strong professional network. These qualities will help you grow, create meaningful opportunities, and achieve long-term success.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest opportunities in my field is expanding our reach to help more businesses achieve their goals. By providing financial guidance, strategic planning, and IT solutions, we can empower organizations to grow, improve efficiency, and achieve long-term success.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that matter most to me are staying open to new opportunities, embracing the unexpected, and always pushing forward. I believe that growth comes from keeping an open mind, maintaining a positive outlook, and persevering through challenges with determination.
