Mary Estep Morgan is a visual artist and former educator based in the Dallas–Fort Worth area whose work is rooted in abstract expressionism. Her artistic journey began early while attending the International School of Zurich, where a formative art class with teacher Rhoda Isaac sparked a lasting passion for creativity. Living in Switzerland also gave her the opportunity to experience European art firsthand, which deeply influenced her appreciation for artistic expression. These early experiences helped shape a lifelong commitment to the arts and laid the foundation for a career that would blend education, creativity, and personal exploration.

Morgan earned her undergraduate degree from Baylor University, where she studied physical education and art education, and began her professional career teaching while also coaching. Over time, art became an increasingly central part of her life and career. She later pursued a Master of Arts in Painting and Art History from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas, completing the degree in 2002. During her graduate studies, the encouragement and mentorship of her professors played a pivotal role in strengthening her identity as an artist and inspiring her to pursue painting with greater dedication and purpose.

For more than three decades, Morgan balanced her passion for art with a distinguished career in education, teaching art at multiple levels and serving as an adjunct professor for many years. It was during this period that she began producing a significant body of work while refining her voice as an artist. Today, she focuses primarily on abstract expressionist painting, creating works that reflect personal experience, spiritual reflection, and the joy of creative exploration. Through her art, Morgan continues to pursue new avenues of expression while sharing her lifelong dedication to creativity and learning.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute much of my success to the strong foundation my parents gave me growing up. They were wonderful people who modeled the values of hard work, generosity, and integrity in their daily lives. From an early age, they showed me what dedication and responsibility looked like, and those lessons stayed with me throughout my life. Their example taught me not only how to work diligently but also how important it is to give to others and approach life with kindness and purpose.

Education also played a significant role in shaping my path. My parents deeply valued learning and made sure that education was a priority in our home. Because of their encouragement, I developed a love for learning that ultimately influenced both my career and my personal growth. They believed strongly in the opportunities that education could provide, and their support helped guide many of the decisions I made along the way.

In fact, my parents were the ones who first encouraged me to become a teacher. They often told me that they believed I would be a good teacher, and their confidence in me helped shape that direction in my life. That guidance led me to a career in education that spanned more than three decades and allowed me to share my passion for art and learning with others. Looking back, I truly believe that the values and encouragement I received from my parents were the foundation for everything I have accomplished.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is to focus on one area that truly captures your interest and commit to learning everything you can about it. When you have many interests, it can be tempting to try to pursue several paths at once, but real growth often comes from dedicating yourself to one field and developing your skills within it. Whatever that area may be—whether teaching, business, art, or another profession—the key is to invest the time and energy needed to become knowledgeable and capable in that specific pursuit.

I also believe that genuine interest is just as important as talent or ability. Someone may have natural skill in a particular field, but without a strong personal interest, it can be difficult to stay motivated or fully develop that potential. Passion and curiosity help sustain the dedication required to grow and improve over time. When you are truly interested in what you are doing, the process of learning and working becomes far more meaningful and fulfilling.

Ultimately, if you have the opportunity to choose your path, choose something you truly love to do. Pursuing work that inspires you makes it easier to remain committed, overcome challenges, and continue developing your abilities. When passion and focus come together, they create a strong foundation for both personal satisfaction and professional success.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the arts or education fields is to recognize that life often unfolds in different stages, and it’s important to give your full attention to what matters most during each phase. If building a family is something that is important to you, it is perfectly reasonable to prioritize that when the time is right. Every person’s situation is different, and decisions about career and family are often made together with loved ones. What matters most is thoughtfully considering what is best for your life and your family at that particular time.

I also believe it is important to be patient and not feel pressured to accomplish everything all at once. Trying to manage too many goals simultaneously can make it difficult to do any one thing well. Instead, focusing your energy and attention on the priorities that are most meaningful in the moment allows you to give your best effort and experience each stage of life more fully.

Most importantly, choose something you truly love to do and pursue it with dedication. Your passions and interests can guide you toward a fulfilling path, but success often comes from patience and thoughtful focus. By taking life one step at a time and committing yourself to the things that matter most, you can build a meaningful career and a balanced life.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest opportunities in my field is the wide range of ways artists can share and promote their work, both locally and internationally. In my own experience, I have found valuable opportunities through local galleries and collaborations with professionals such as interior designers who feature artwork in the homes they design. These relationships can be incredibly helpful in introducing artwork to new audiences and creating additional avenues for artists to generate income. Being part of a strong local arts community, such as the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex, also provides artists with many opportunities to exhibit their work and connect with collectors and fellow creatives. At the same time, the art world has become increasingly global. Artists today have the ability to showcase their work internationally through online exhibitions, global art platforms, and gallery partnerships around the world. I have personally had opportunities to present my work through international organizations and galleries, including exhibitions and online showcases in places such as Switzerland and New York. These global platforms allow artists to reach audiences far beyond their local communities and expand their professional presence. However, participating in these opportunities often requires thoughtful financial planning. Many exhibitions, especially international or online showcases, involve participation fees or other costs, so artists must consider their budgets carefully and decide which opportunities align best with their goals. For emerging artists in particular, it is important to be selective and choose the venues or platforms where their work will have the greatest impact and exposure. With the right balance of local engagement and global outreach, artists today have more pathways than ever to share their work and build their careers.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The value that is most important to me in both my work and personal life is relationships. I believe that meaningful connections with others are at the heart of everything we do. Communication plays a vital role in building those relationships, whether it is with people we know well or with those we are meeting for the first time. I have experienced firsthand that genuine connection can transcend language and cultural differences. During my time in Istanbul, I discovered that even without speaking the same language, it is possible to communicate through respect, openness, and shared understanding.

When people connect on a deeper level, it creates mutual respect and appreciation for one another’s lives, work, and perspectives. These connections naturally lead to a stronger sense of community. I believe that community is something we all need, and it is built through relationships that are rooted in kindness, communication, and respect. When we take the time to understand one another, we begin to recognize the common ground that unites us.

Ultimately, I believe we are meant to live in harmony and support one another. In a world that can sometimes feel divided, I try to focus on showing kindness and compassion wherever I can. My goal is to treat others with consideration, to offer encouragement when it is needed, and to create opportunities for connection and understanding. By leading with love, respect, and empathy, we can help foster stronger communities and a more peaceful world.
