About Mary

Mary Martin Tillman is a leader in operations and logistics who believes that strong teams and clear processes are the foundation for lasting results. Over 15 years, she has guided multi-state operations and complex networks, developing systems that balance efficiency, reliability, and customer service.

Mary’s approach to leadership is rooted in clarity, balance, and authenticity. Early in her career, she learned to “couch her honesty”—communicating truth in a way that informs and empowers without creating confusion. She encourages her teams to succeed through focus, accountability, and trust, while leading in a style that aligns with her own strengths rather than trying to fit a mold.

Passionate about mentoring the next generation of leaders, Mary advises young women entering the industry to learn the business end-to-end, embrace challenges, and trust their perspective. She sees today’s operational complexities—labor shortages, fluctuating demand, and evolving regulations—not only as challenges but as opportunities for innovation, process improvement, and meaningful leadership impact.

Integrity, collaboration, and continuous learning guide both her professional and personal life, shaping her commitment to building resilient operations, empowering teams, and delivering results with purpose.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Mary

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to staying curious, being willing to learn from every experience, and trusting my own voice as a leader. Early in my career, I realized that results come not just from hard work, but from empowering others, creating clarity, and fostering a team environment where people can succeed day after day. By focusing on collaboration, integrity, and continuous improvement, I’ve been able to grow both as a leader and as a person.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best advice I ever received was to “couch my honesty.” Early in my leadership career, a former distribution center manager challenged me to find the right balance between transparency and clarity. I learned that while teams need honest communication to succeed, too much information—especially details that don’t affect their day-to-day work—can create confusion, distraction, or unnecessary doubt. Keeping communication simple, specific, and relevant builds clarity, maintains focus, and allows leaders to spend more time guiding the team rather than managing noise.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Learn the operation from the ground up. Spend time understanding how work actually moves—on the floor, in the field, and across systems—because credibility in this industry comes from knowing the details and how they connect. Don’t shy away from challenging assignments, night shifts, or problem areas; those experiences accelerate growth and build confidence. Speak up, ask questions, and trust your perspective. You don’t need to match anyone else’s leadership style—consistency, preparation, and follow-through matter more than perfection.

Effective leaders in operations succeed in different ways—some are direct, some are collaborative, some are quiet problem-solvers. What matters is being consistent, prepared, fair, and accountable. Lead in a way that aligns with your strengths while delivering results.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in operations and supply chain is balancing efficiency with complexity—navigating labor shortages, fluctuating demand, and compliance pressures—while still delivering excellent service. For women entering the field, this environment is also an opportunity: to bring fresh perspectives, lead process improvements, and leverage data and technology to drive measurable results. By building adaptable, high-performing teams and trusting their own leadership style, emerging leaders can turn these challenges into opportunities to make a real impact on both operations and organizational culture.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity, accountability, and consistency are central to both my work and personal life. I value honesty and transparency in communication, follow through on commitments, and strive to lead by example. Collaboration and respect for others’ perspectives are also important, because strong relationships and trust are the foundation for high-performing teams. Finally, continuous learning and improvement guide me—professionally, I seek opportunities to optimize processes and mentor others, and personally, I focus on growth and balance in all areas of life.
