About Maya
Maya Espinal is a healthcare, veterinary, and environmental health professional whose career reflects a deep commitment to advancing the interconnected principles of One Health. With nearly a decade of experience spanning healthcare administration, veterinary medicine, biotechnology, public health research, and environmental science, she has built a multidisciplinary career focused on improving systems, outcomes, education, and collaboration across sectors.
As the founder of One Health Nexus, which she established four years ago, Maya leads consulting, research, education, and mentorship initiatives that bridge human, animal, and environmental health. Her work emphasizes data-driven decision-making, organizational leadership, compliance, workforce development, and innovative solutions to complex health challenges.
Throughout her career, Maya has held leadership, research, and operational roles across healthcare and veterinary organizations. She has served as an Assistant Hospital Manager within veterinary healthcare systems, supported emergency and critical care services, led molecular laboratory research and diagnostics, and contributed to conservation and environmental health initiatives.
Her research experience includes work with California State University, Long Beach, where she has participated in outcomes measurement, program evaluation, public health informatics, and geospatial health analytics projects. In addition to her research and operational expertise, Maya is an educator, coach, and mentor who is passionate about preparing the next generation of healthcare professionals. She also teaches Biology and Health Sciences, helping students develop the scientific foundation needed for careers in healthcare and public health.
Maya’s academic and professional achievements reflect her dedication to lifelong learning and interdisciplinary collaboration. She holds certifications in Biotechnology and Environmental Research, an Associate degree in Natural Sciences, and a Bachelor's degree from California State University, Long Beach. She is currently pursuing a Master of Science in Healthcare Informatics and Data Analytics at the University of San Diego.
Through her consulting practice, university research affiliations, volunteer service, and educational initiatives, Maya continues to champion a vision of integrated health that recognizes the vital connections between people, animals, and the environment. Her mission is to leverage research, education, informatics, and leadership to create healthier communities and sustainable systems for future generations while advancing the One Health approach through collaboration, innovation, and evidence-based practice.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to perseverance, lifelong learning, and the mentors who challenged me to think beyond traditional boundaries. Every experience—whether in healthcare, veterinary medicine, research, education, or environmental conservation—has reinforced my belief that meaningful change begins with a willingness to keep learning, collaborate across disciplines, and remain committed to a purpose greater than yourself.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Stay true to your mission, even when the path is uncertain or unconventional. Some of the most meaningful work begins long before others understand the vision. Trust your purpose, continue learning, and let integrity guide every decision.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Never let inexperience convince you that you don't belong. Ask questions, seek mentors, and embrace every opportunity to learn. Knowledge is built over time, confidence comes through experience, and your unique perspective can become one of your greatest strengths. The future of healthcare depends on leaders who are willing to think differently and work together across disciplines.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the greatest challenges is ensuring that education, policy, and healthcare systems evolve as quickly as science and technology. At the same time, this presents an incredible opportunity to strengthen collaboration across human, animal, and environmental health. By embracing the One Health approach, we can develop more innovative, data-driven, and sustainable solutions that improve health outcomes for communities worldwide.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Integrity, compassion, curiosity, and service guide everything I do. I believe education is one of the most powerful tools for creating lasting change, and that every opportunity to mentor, collaborate, and share knowledge has the potential to improve lives. Through the One Health approach, I strive to leave every community stronger than I found it while inspiring others to become lifelong learners and leaders.

I have always known that I wanted to dedicate my life to improving the health of people, animals, and the environment. Long before I discovered the term One Health, I was already pursuing that mission.
Throughout my career, I have worked in healthcare, veterinary medicine, research, education, biotechnology, and environmental conservation-often simultaneously. While each role was incredibly rewarding, I found myself asking the same question again and again:
Why are these fields working separately when they are all connected?
There were few opportunities to build a career that intentionally brought these disciplines together. Most organizations focused on a single area of health, while the connections between human, animal, and environmental well-being were often overlooked. Yet every experience reinforced what I had witnessed firsthand: the health of people, animals, and the environment cannot be separated.
The One Health Movement
Today, the One Health movement is finally gaining the attention it deserves. As our world faces emerging diseases, environmental change, food insecurity, antimicrobial resistance, and growing public health challenges, collaboration is no longer optional-it is essential. The future of health depends on breaking down barriers between professions and recognizing that protecting one means protecting all.
That realization inspired me to found One Health Nexus.

One Health Nexus was born from the belief that research, education, and collaboration can transform the future of health. My vision is to create a place where healthcare professionals, veterinarians, researchers, educators, students, environmental scientists, policymakers, and community members come together to learn from one another and develop solutions that improve lives.
Education is the foundation of that vision.
Every mentor who invested in me, every classroom I have entered, every patient I have cared for, every research project I have contributed to, and every student I have had the privilege of teaching has reinforced one lesson: knowledge has the power to change lives. When we share knowledge across disciplines, we multiply our ability to solve problems and create lasting impact.
The Future I Believe In
My hope is that One Health Nexus becomes more than an organization. I hope it becomes a movement that inspires people to think differently about health-not as separate systems, but as a shared responsibility.
The future of health will not be built by one profession alone.
It will be built by people who are willing to learn from one another, work together, and recognize that the well-being of people, animals, and the environment is inseparable.
That is the future I believe in.
