Melissa Adams, MBA, is a business administration and operations leader with more than 15 years of experience overseeing financial, administrative, and organizational functions that drive operational excellence. As Director of Administration for the Residential and Commercial division at The Townsend Company, she provides strategic leadership across multiple business entities, overseeing financial operations, administrative teams, process standardization, HR support, and enterprise systems. Her expertise includes accounting, payroll, budgeting, compliance, reporting, workflow optimization, and organizational change management, helping position the company for sustainable growth through acquisitions and continuous improvement initiatives.
Before assuming her current leadership role, Melissa served as Office Manager within Townsend, where she successfully built and mentored high-performing teams while implementing systems that improved operational efficiency and strengthened collaboration across departments. Earlier in her career, she held leadership positions in human resources with NeuroPsychiatric Hospitals and General Motors and spent several years managing business office operations within the healthcare sector. Her diverse background also includes experience in education, providing her with a unique perspective on leadership, communication, coaching, and organizational development. She holds a Master of Business Administration from Western Governors University and has been recognized as Associate of the Year by The Townsend Company.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to a combination of faith, perseverance, and the people who have been willing to invest in me along the way. I’ve never been afraid to work hard, but I’ve also learned that success isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about being willing to learn, surrounding yourself with good people, and staying open to opportunities that may stretch you.
I also think a big part of my success has come from genuinely caring about people. I’ve always believed that leadership is less about a title and more about helping the people around you succeed. Some of the moments that have grown me the most have actually been the difficult ones—times of change, uncertainty, or when I had to step outside of what was comfortable.
And personally, my faith has always been the foundation underneath it all. It keeps me grounded and reminds me that success isn’t just about what I accomplish, but how I treat people and the kind of impact I leave behind.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
To lead by example and train your team so well that you are no longer needed.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Always remember, you can be kind and still be strong! I would also encourage young women to lead with confidence, integrity, and a servant's heart. Never underestimate the value of learning, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Build strong relationships, invest in your team, and remember that leadership is about serving others, creating opportunities for growth, and leaving organizations stronger than you found them.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the greatest opportunities in operations today is successfully leading organizations through growth and change. Integrating new technologies, standardizing processes across multiple business units, building cross-functional collaboration, and creating scalable systems are essential to supporting long-term organizational success while maintaining excellent service for both employees and customers.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I believe in servant leadership, collaboration, integrity, accountability, continuous improvement, empathy, consistency, and investing in people. I value creating an environment where individuals feel supported, trusted, and empowered to grow while never losing sight of the importance of family, balance, and serving others.

You Can Be Kind and Still Be Strong
If there is one thing I would want other women to know, it is this: Never mistake kindness for weakness. You can be kind and still be strong.
For a long time, I think many women have felt like we have to choose. We can be compassionate or commanding. Approachable or respected. A good wife and mother or an ambitious professional. We can lead with our hearts or lead with authority.
I've learned that we don't have to choose.
My Journey Hasn't Been a Perfectly Planned Path
I started my career in education, later found myself building a career in business, went back to school for my MBA, and continued taking on opportunities that stretched me far beyond what I originally imagined for myself. Along the way, I've balanced being a wife, raising three daughters, serving in my church, caring for family, and growing as a professional and a leader.
And I certainly haven't done all of it perfectly.
There have been seasons when I questioned myself. There have been difficult conversations, long days, unexpected changes, and moments when leadership required me to make decisions that weren't easy or popular.
But those experiences taught me something important: strength doesn't require you to become hard.
- You can hold people accountable and still care about them.
- You can say no and still be compassionate.
- You can make difficult decisions and still lead with grace.
- You can walk into a room with confidence without needing to be the loudest person in it.
- You can be successful without becoming someone you don't recognize.
Some of the Greatest Lessons in My Career Have Come From Simply Being Willing to Keep Learning
I don't believe good leaders need to know everything. I believe they need to be willing to listen, ask questions, admit when they don't know something, surround themselves with good people, and keep moving forward.
My faith has also taught me that success is about much more than a title, salary, or position. Those things may mark milestones in our lives, but they don't define our impact. At the end of the day, I want the people I've worked with to remember how I made them feel, that I believed in them, that I challenged them when they needed it, and that I helped make something better than I found it.

Apply for the position. Speak up in the meeting. Ask the question. Go back to school if that's your dream. Take the opportunity that scares you a little. And don't believe that you have to change the best parts of yourself to become a strong leader.
