Her Story

About Melissa Rose

Melissa Rose Smith, MSN, BSN, RN, is a nursing healthcare educator, leader, and entrepreneur with more than two decades of healthcare experience. She began her career as a Licensed Nursing Assistant in 2005 and steadily advanced through the nursing profession, ultimately earning an Associate Degree in Nursing from Lakes Region Community College, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with a focus on Nursing Leadership from Southern New Hampshire University in 2016, and a Master of Science in Nursing in Nursing Education. Her career has included leadership, education, skilled nursing, and direct patient care, giving her a broad perspective on both the clinical and organizational sides of healthcare. Melissa currently serves in nursing leadership at Golden View Health Center while remaining actively involved in bedside nursing and patient care. She also served as Director of Home health, Hospice and Palliative Care with Pemi-Baker Hospice and Home health and is the owner of Med Pathways LLC, a healthcare trade school focused on expanding access to quality healthcare education. Through Med Pathways, she provides programs including Licensed Nursing Assistant and Medication Nursing Assistant training, IV therapy certification, and BLS training. Her work is centered on preparing healthcare professionals with the knowledge, practical skills, confidence, and compassion needed to provide excellent patient care. Beyond her professional roles, Melissa is committed to leadership, mentorship, and community service. She serves on the New Hampshire Healthcare Association Education Committee and the board of Frankie's Place, and she serves as a camp nurse with the Circle Program, supporting girls at risk. Her own journey—from growing up in low income to becoming a nurse, educator, leader, and business owner—has shaped her commitment to helping others recognize their potential. She credits her life experiences and leadership development through Klemmer and Associates Leadership Seminars with helping her find her voice and overcome the tendency to hold herself back. Her leadership philosophy is grounded in honesty, teamwork, love, joy, and the belief that effective leaders should never ask their employees to do something they would not willingly do themselves.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Melissa Rose

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my life experiences and my determination to create a different future for myself and my family. I grew up in poverty and knew that I did not want to remain in those circumstances. I am the first and only person in my immediate family to pursue education and a career to the extent that I have, and I was motivated by wanting my children to have opportunities and experiences different from those I had growing up. Leadership training through Klemmer Coaching was also transformative for me. Over two years ago, I learned to stop holding myself back, recognize my own potential, and find the confidence and voice to step fully into leadership.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have received is simply to be myself and not be afraid to be myself. Learning to embrace who I am, trust my own voice, and show up authentically has been an important part of my personal and professional growth.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice is to be kind. Nursing can involve significant lateral violence, and it is important to remember that everyone was a beginner at some point. We need to support and encourage one another rather than tear each other down. Nursing is facing workforce challenges, and creating a culture of kindness and respect is essential to building strong teams and ensuring that we continue to have dedicated colleagues caring for our patients.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Healthcare continues to face significant challenges, including inadequate Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement, staffing shortages, the high cost of agency staff, and extensive regulatory requirements. In long-term care in particular, these pressures can make it difficult to maintain the kind of home-like environment that residents deserve.

At the same time, I see tremendous opportunity through healthcare education. Through Med Pathways, I am working to help address training gaps and strengthen the knowledge, skills, and confidence of healthcare professionals. Expanding access to quality education can help prepare a stronger healthcare workforce and ultimately improve patient care.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me are honesty, teamwork, love, and joy. Honesty is especially important because I believe trust is foundational to strong relationships and effective leadership. I also value teamwork and believe that people accomplish more when they support one another. Above all, I want to approach both my work and personal life with love and joy.
