About Michelle

Michelle Martinez is the Director of Community Relations at The Chelsea at Brookhaven, a premier senior living community in Yaphank, New York, where she leads with both heart and high performance. With over 20 years of experience in real estate before transitioning into senior living in 2022, Michelle brings a powerful combination of sales expertise, marketing strategy, and authentic relationship-building to everything she does.

In her role, Michelle oversees all sales and marketing efforts, leads the concierge team, and is directly responsible for driving occupancy and shaping the overall experience for prospective residents and their families. Under her leadership, the community has grown from 70% occupancy to near full capacity in under two years—an achievement driven by her innovative, education-first approach and unwavering commitment to connection.

Known for transforming the traditional “tour” into a personalized “experience visit,” Michelle has redefined how families engage with senior living. She integrates storytelling, immersive experiences, and strategic follow-up—including personalized video messaging—to create meaningful, lasting impressions that move families forward with confidence. Her ability to blend modern marketing tools with genuine human connection has made her a standout leader within The Chelsea organization.

Michelle is also deeply committed to professional collaboration and community education. She regularly partners with healthcare providers, rehab centers, home care agencies, and elder law attorneys to host continuing education seminars and networking events, strengthening referral relationships and elevating standards of care across the industry.

Her leadership extends beyond her own community. Recognized as a thought leader across The Chelsea’s 14 communities, Michelle mentors other Community Relations Directors on lead generation, CRM strategy, and conversion techniques—empowering teams to build stronger pipelines and deliver exceptional experiences.

What truly sets Michelle apart is her ability to connect on a deeply personal level. Having cared for her own aging parents, she understands firsthand the emotional weight families carry during this transition. She leads with empathy, clarity, and compassion—ensuring every family feels supported, informed, and confident in their decisions.

Outside of her professional role, Michelle is a devoted mother and partner who balances a demanding leadership position with family life, bringing the same intentionality, warmth, and strength into both. Her presence—both online and in person—reflects a modern, relatable, and empowering voice in senior living.

Michelle Martinez is not only driving occupancy—she is changing the narrative of senior living, one family, one experience, and one connection at a time.

Ten minutes with Michelle

01What do you attribute your success to?

I truly believe my success comes from understanding what families are going through—because I’m living it too while caring for my own aging parents. That perspective allows me to connect on a deeper level. I’m not here to “sell”—I’m here to educate, guide, and support families through one of the most emotional decisions they’ll ever make.

I work closely with social workers, hospitals, and care teams to handle every detail—from coordinating medications to managing the transition—so families can focus on what really matters: spending meaningful time with their loved ones.

And the impact speaks for itself. When I started, our occupancy was in the 70s. Today, we’re approaching full capacity—a direct reflection of the trust, relationships, and level of care I bring to every family I have the privilege to serve.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received is: “Focus on people, not transactions.”

That completely changed how I approach my work. Early in my career, it was easy to get caught up in numbers, goals, and outcomes. But the moment I shifted to truly understanding people—their fears, their needs, their story—everything changed.

In senior living especially, this isn’t a typical “sale.” It’s a life transition. When you lead with empathy, listen more than you speak, and genuinely guide families instead of pushing them, trust is built—and trust drives everything.

The results will come, but relationships are what sustain long-term success.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is simple: lead with your heart, but don’t forget your power.

Senior living is a relationship-driven business, and your ability to connect, empathize, and truly listen is your superpower. Don’t let anyone make you feel like being compassionate makes you “soft”—it’s actually what makes you effective.

At the same time, own your voice. Speak with confidence, set boundaries, and don’t be afraid to take up space at the table. You can be warm and strong. You can care deeply and drive results.

Also—stay curious and always be learning. This industry is constantly evolving, and the women who stand out are the ones who educate themselves, build strong professional relationships, and show up consistently.

And lastly, remember this: you’re not just filling apartments—you’re changing lives. When you keep that at the center of your work, success will follow.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Staffing continues to be one of the biggest pressures—we need more caregivers, more support, and more people who truly understand this work. At the same time, rising costs and regulations are making it more complex to operate while still keeping care accessible for families.

Another challenge is perception. Many families still think senior living is a last resort, when in reality, it’s evolved into something so much more—vibrant, social, and supportive.

But with all of that comes incredible opportunity.

We’re in a moment where senior living is being redefined. There’s a huge shift toward personalized care, wellness-focused lifestyles, and technology that enhances safety and independence.

There’s also an opportunity to better educate families earlier—helping them plan before they’re in crisis. That’s where I see the biggest impact. When we shift from reactive decisions to proactive planning, everything changes for families.

For me, this industry isn’t just growing—it’s transforming. And the real opportunity is to lead that transformation with empathy, innovation, and a better experience for every family we serve.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide me—both in my work and my personal life—are empathy, integrity, and connection.

Empathy is at the core of everything I do. Whether I’m working with families or showing up for my own loved ones, I believe in truly understanding what people are going through and meeting them where they are.

Integrity is non-negotiable for me. I do what I say I’m going to do, I’m honest even when it’s hard, and I always put people before the process. Trust is everything in this field, and it’s something I work to earn every single day.

And connection—that’s what drives me. Building real relationships, not surface-level interactions. Whether it’s with families, colleagues, or my own circle, I value being present, being genuine, and creating meaningful experiences.

At the end of the day, everything I do comes back to people. If I can make someone feel seen, supported, and cared for—then I know I’m doing it right.
