Michelle Martinez

Director of Community Relations
Chelsea Senior Living
Miller Place, NY 11764

Michelle Martinez is the Director of Community Relations at the Chelsea at Brookhaven, a premier senior living community in Yaphank, New York. With over 20 years of experience in real estate before transitioning to senior living in 2022, Michelle brings a unique blend of sales expertise, marketing acumen, and relationship-building skills to her role. She leads the concierge department, oversees marketing and sales efforts, and is responsible for driving occupancy and ensuring a welcoming, supportive environment for residents and their families.

Since joining the Chelsea nearly two years ago, Michelle has successfully increased community occupancy from 70% to nearly full capacity through her compassionate, education-focused approach. She works closely with families during critical and often stressful transitions, helping them understand that senior living is a vibrant, resort-style experience rather than a traditional nursing home. Michelle also leads continuing education seminars for social workers and case managers in partnership with elder law attorneys, fostering professional collaboration and advocating for best practices in senior care.

Beyond her professional achievements, Michelle draws on her personal experience caring for her aging parents to connect authentically with families and residents. Her approach emphasizes empathy, education, and family-centered care, ensuring that each individual feels valued and supported. Recognized as a thought leader within the Chelsea brand’s 14 communities, she mentors other Community Relations Directors on lead generation, database management, and effective strategies for creating meaningful connections that enhance both resident experience and community growth.

Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to genuinely understanding what families are going through, as I’m also caring for my aging parents. This empathy allows me to connect with families not by selling, but by educating them on what makes The Chelsea unique. I collaborate with social workers, hospitals, and care teams to handle every detail—from medications to transitions—so families can fully enjoy time with their loved ones. The results speak for themselves: when I started, occupancy was in the 70s, and now we’re approaching full capacity, reflecting the trust and care I bring to every family I serve.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in senior living is that many families wait until their loved ones can no longer safely stay at home, often due to dementia or wandering, before seeking help. There’s still a stigma around senior living—people fear it’s just a “nursing home” and feel guilty, which leads to delayed decisions and high turnover, with many residents passing within two to three years of moving in. This also takes a significant toll on family caregivers, whose health and life expectancy often decline when they become primary caregivers. The greatest opportunity lies in educating families early about what senior living truly offers: a vibrant, resort-style environment where their loved ones can thrive while we manage meals, housekeeping, and care.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide me in both my work and personal life are honesty and integrity, combined with compassion and empathy. I prioritize family connection and dedicate myself to serving residents and their families, ensuring they feel supported, understood, and cared for at every step.
