Her Story

About Mijin

I have dedicated 22 years to dentistry and academia, serving as Clinical Professor and Program Director of the Advanced Education Program in Prosthodontics at New York University College of Dentistry for the past 13 years, with 20 years total at the institution. I hold two specialties in prosthodontics and maxillofacial prosthetics, and I am a board-certified prosthodontist and maxillofacial prosthodontist. My main areas of expertise are academic leadership, student education, and curriculum design. Throughout my career, I have had the honor of serving in executive leadership roles for 7 to 10 years across multiple prestigious organizations, and I am proud to have been the first Asian woman president of several organizations that are over 100 years old, including the Greater New York Academy of Prosthodontics and the Academy of Prosthodontics. I view my role as paving the way not only as a woman but also as a Korean American, providing mentorship and cultivating the next generation of leaders in my field.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to tenacity and never giving up. Keeping my focus in one place and staying grounded in my true values has been essential. Over the years, my value identities have become clearer and clearer, and I make sure that all the things I do are aligned with my values and identity. Daily reflection is very, very critical because a lot of times you don't give yourself time to reflect on yourself. It's not about being judgmental, but rather having an eye for yourself in a more compassionate way. What I realized over the years is that when I can be more compassionate about my own work, I can be the same for others too. To sum it up, the qualities I strive to cultivate and continue to cultivate are tenacity, focus, resilience, and compassion. I don't aim for perfection, but I aim to share what I learned along the way as I am learning it.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I think that really knowing your why is the most important thing, and having an ultimate, clear picture of why you do what you do. Make sure that you are spending your energy and focus on the items that are important and meaningful for you, so that at the end of your lifetime, you can look back and say, yes, I spent my lifetime of effort doing this, and it was worth it. I think when you are doing that, it truly not only helps oneself, but also truly helps others around you.
