Monica S. Amparo is a retired securities regulation attorney based in Arlington, Virginia and promoter of the Rosary and worldwide sacred art. She built a distinguished legal career spanning more than a decade, specializing in securities and commodities regulation, enforcement, arbitration, and investment adviser matters. Her professional experience includes roles with organizations such as the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority, Commodity Futures Trading Commission, American Stock Exchange, and as a contract attorney with Mayer Brown and Platt. She earned her Juris Doctor from The University of Texas School of Law and an LL.M. in Securities Regulation from Georgetown Law.
After retiring from legal practice in 2011, Monica pursued various endeavors, including a review of Rosary prayer books. She saw that the available books on the market had rigid spines, lacked deep Scripture and featured European art exclusively, despite the fact that most of the world's Catholics do not come from Europe. She is the creator and promoter of a spiral bound Rosary prayer book, "One Mother, One Family: A Scriptural Meditation on the Rosary with Worldwide Sacred Art" that features Scripture and sacred images from local artists representing six continents. Her mission is to encourage cultural understanding, inclusion, and spiritual connection through the Rosary, Scripture and sacred art. Through her worldwide sacred art initiative, she highlights local artists from different continents. She shows how every culture offers a distinctive artistic vision of the same Gospel mysteries while proclaiming the one, unchanging truth of Christ.
Monica’s work combines her legal background, research skills, and passion for faith, art, and community engagement. Her Rosary book received an Imprimatur from her local bishop and earned recognition in a major Catholic publishing competition, placing third for its contribution to Church inclusion. She is an approved speaker with the Catholic Speakers Organization and is actively involved with the Mariological Society of America, Focolare Movement, Christian Women in Action, Families in Christ Jesus Community, and leads a Divine Mercy Cenacle, where she continues to share her vision for faith, unity, and globally inspired sacred expression.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute much of my success to my father, who initially encouraged me to pursue a career in law. His unwavering support, guidance, and belief in my abilities gave me the confidence to pursue my goals and navigate the challenges along the way.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I would share with a young woman is to seek out a leader who supports and believes in you. While positive relationships with colleagues are valuable, having a manager who recognizes your contributions, advocates for your growth, and trusts your abilities can make a significant difference in your career success.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering my industry is to remain curious, ask thoughtful questions, and listen actively. Learning from others, seeking guidance, and being open to different perspectives are essential for building knowledge, confidence, and long-term success.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values most important to me are honesty, integrity, and the willingness to ask questions. I believe staying curious and open to learning helps me continue to grow personally and professionally.

How Diverse Sacred Art Deepens Our Vision of Christ and Connection to the Global Church
Every culture portrays Jesus differently.
For many years, I assumed these differences reflected little more than artistic style. Over time, however, I discovered something much deeper. Every time I prayed with an image of Christ created by another culture, I found myself seeing Jesus through another person's eyes.
Gradually, I began seeing my neighbor differently as well. What began as an appreciation for artistic diversity became a lesson in discipleship.
A Global Church
In recent decades, the geographic center of Catholicism has shifted decisively away from Europe toward Africa, Asia, and Latin America. In 2023, the Vatican's Central Office of Church Statistics reported that 80% of the world's Catholics live outside Europe. Historically, the visual tradition accompanying Catholic devotion has been shaped predominantly by European artistic conventions. Through the expansion of missionary activity and colonial networks, European sacred art was disseminated globally, often becoming the default visual language of Catholic devotion, even in non-European settings. As a result, Catholics in Africa or Asia often encountered devotional books depicting biblical figures through predominantly European artistic conventions rather than imagery reflecting their own cultures or the historical Jewish context of Scripture.
Three Important Ways
While the European tradition remains foundational because of its historical significance, including sacred artwork from other continents in prayer books enriches the Church's devotional life in three important ways.
- First, every culture receives Christ through its own artistic language, allowing believers to recognize that Jesus truly shared in our humanity through the mystery of the Incarnation.
- Second, as people created in the image and likeness of God, encountering Christ through another culture's eyes can deepen our ability to recognize His image in one another. In turn, this helps us recognize Him more readily in our neighbors, whether they live next door or across the world.
- Finally, for younger Catholics formed in an intensely visual culture, diverse sacred art offers an engaging point of entry into traditional devotional prayer.
The Rosary and Worldwide Sacred Art
In the case of the Rosary, a highly structured devotional prayer recited throughout the world, incorporating worldwide sacred art alongside Scripture introduces new dimensions of engagement. The artwork becomes a gateway to encountering Catholics across the globe—their faith, their cultures, and ultimately Christ as they have come to know Him. Visual representations drawn from Africa, Asia, Latin America, Oceania, and the Americas, paired with meditation texts, offer culturally situated interpretations of the mysteries of the Rosary, inviting participants to encounter familiar biblical stories through unfamiliar yet resonant images.
This inclusion of culturally diverse art does not alter the structure of the Rosary itself but enriches opportunities for reflection. The repetition of prayer is accompanied by a visual encounter with the global Church, reinforcing the universality of Catholicism while acknowledging that Christians around the world have contemplated the same mysteries through very different cultural lenses.
Additionally, praying with Scripture for each mystery helps focus our attention on the virtues revealed within it and deepens our meditation. Together, these icons, images, and scriptural meditations invite us to contemplate the mysteries of Christ's Incarnation, ministry, suffering, and redemption, expanding both mind and heart during prayer.
As the faithful finger their beads and recite familiar prayers, the accompanying imagery and scriptural meditations shape their attention, emotions, and reflection. The result is a richer devotional experience in which visual, textual, and spoken elements interact, leading not merely to meditation but to contemplation of the sacred mysteries.
A Global Community of Believers
A curated selection of worldwide sacred art also fosters a sense of connection to the global community of believers. By encountering artistic representations from diverse cultural contexts, the faithful develop a lived awareness of the Church as one Body—an awareness especially needed in today's fragmented and conflict-ridden world.
This expanded devotional practice contributes to a broader reimagining of Catholic identity—one that is less centered on a single continent and more reflective of the Church's global diversity.
The integration of worldwide sacred art and scriptural meditations into a traditional devotional form reflects broader transformations within Catholicism as the Church adapts to shifting demographic and cultural realities. As regions outside Europe continue to grow in influence, their artistic and spiritual expressions are likely to play an increasingly significant role in shaping the future of the Church at every level.
Sacred Art as Teacher
I have come to understand that sacred art is not only a matter of beauty or tradition. It is also a profound teacher.
Every time I pray with sacred art from another part of the world, I am reminded that Christ came for every people and every nation. Learning to recognize Him through another culture's sacred art has taught me to recognize Him more readily in my neighbor.
Perhaps that is the greatest contribution of worldwide sacred art: broadening our vision of who Christ is and, in doing so, enlarging our capacity to love.
