Q

What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to my perseverance to proving every person wrong that ever said I was never going to do anything worthwhile with my life. I grew up with a mom who was there physically, but never advocated for me when it came to my mental health, and I struggled severely in school due to the fact, along with being low income and for most of my high school career, homeless. I was able to just graduate from high school with a 2.0 grade point average. My early adult years were not much better, as I attempted to get on my feet and fell short, couch surfing and fighting a deep battle with my mental illness. I ended up taking a five year mental health leave to better myself and be able to start fresh. I was able to advocate for myself and do a lot of self work in order to be where I am now.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is that there are always going to be enough animals in the world for you to work with, you don’t need to look at the other businesses out there that are doing the same job as you as competitors. These people are opportunities to grow and build a network of businesses that you can refer your customers to when you aren’t available to work for them, and when asked if you can vouch for their work ethic, instead of not having an opinion, you can have a clear answer and say that you have met them and that you feel comfortable with sending them a client.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

The Pet Care industry, Let alone the Pet Business realm in general is always looking for new ways to improve and expand. There are so many great ways that you can offer pet care services, and so many different ways that you can offer them. Do your research and don’t be afraid to ask questions, and look for things that people might want to see more of. Find someone no one has done yet. We could always use something new and exciting for our animal lover community

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

My biggest Challenge is getting people to differentiate my business and my services from the people who offer Pet Care Services (Dog Walking, Pet Sitting), when they need extra support when their own income isn’t enough to support them. Pet Care Services used to be the standard for teens trying to make their summer vacation money, or College kids trying to make money to pay rent, but has since changed to become a respected profession, and it’s hard when people question whether you’re still going to be around once the holiday season is over.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I always maintain a level of respect with my clients as if they were my own family. Their animals are always treated as if they were my own, and I always leave their house cleaner than when I arrived. These people are allowing me to come into their homes, take care of their pets and stay overnight. I am not going to invade their privacy. I would expect the same from them as they would from me.
