Her Interview

Ten minutes with Nancy

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to perseverance, resilience, and the determination to keep moving forward regardless of obstacles. Growing up in a low-income, disadvantaged community taught me the value of hard work and persistence. Throughout my career, I have also benefited from outstanding mentors and coaches, embraced continuous learning through trial and error, and remained focused on solving problems with integrity. My guiding philosophy has always been simple: get it done while helping others succeed along the way.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I encourage young women to become their own strongest advocates. Invest in building meaningful professional relationships, develop a strong network, and seek sponsors who will champion your growth, open doors, and amplify your voice. Above all, protect your character and reputation, remain authentic, and continue persevering even when challenges arise.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the greatest opportunities in my field is helping shape environmental and social justice initiatives while advancing California's clean energy transition and creating more equitable access for underserved communities. At the same time, there are significant challenges, including limited staffing and resources within the public sector, compensation constraints, and the ongoing barriers and stigmas that women of color continue to face in leadership positions. These challenges require innovative thinking, collaboration, and sustained commitment to meaningful change.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Integrity and trust are the foundation of everything I do. I believe in building authentic relationships, connecting with people through empathy and humanity, and serving my community with purpose. My goal is to create environments where everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered to succeed.
