About Nicole
Nicole Genarella is the Senior Vice President of Growth at 3D Exhibits, where she leads strategic growth initiatives, revenue expansion, sales, marketing, and design operations for one of the industry's most recognized experiential marketing organizations. Nicole began her career in the trade show and exhibit industry in 1997 immediately after graduating from The University of Toledo with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing and International Business. Encouraged by an industry mentor to pursue a career in sales rather than event coordination, she quickly established herself as a high-performing sales professional. In 2002, she joined 3D Exhibits as an Account Executive, bringing with her a successful entrepreneurial book of business valued at approximately $6 million and a passion for building strong client relationships. Over the course of more than 25 years with 3D Exhibits, Nicole has played a transformative role in the company's evolution and growth. Recognizing opportunities to strengthen the organization's market presence, she helped create and develop the company's marketing department while continuing to lead sales efforts. She later established a new business development function and implemented strategic programs focused on measurable client outcomes, including return on investment (ROI) and key performance indicators (KPIs). As her leadership responsibilities expanded, she assumed oversight of satellite offices and sales teams across the organization, ultimately advancing into executive leadership. Today, she is responsible for driving company growth through strategic oversight, cross-functional collaboration, and the development of high-performing teams. Following the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and a significant organizational merger, Nicole played a critical role in rebuilding the business, helping drive revenue growth of more than 40% while positioning the company for long-term success. Known for her resilience, authenticity, and people-first leadership style, Nicole attributes much of her success to perseverance through both professional and personal challenges. Throughout her career, she has navigated significant adversity, she overcame a significant medical challenge while continuing to lead her teams and serve clients at the highest level. She also experienced the loss of both of her parents in the years following the pandemic, events that further shaped her perspective as a leader and mentor. These experiences have strengthened her commitment to developing future leaders, fostering meaningful relationships, and creating a culture of support, growth, and accountability. Today, Nicole is widely respected for her ability to inspire others, drive sustainable business growth, and create lasting impact for clients, colleagues, and the experiential marketing industry as a whole.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Nicole
01What do you attribute your success to?
My success was never handed to me — it was earned, step by step, from the ground up. When I began my journey as a salesperson in 1997, I had nothing but drive, determination, and an unrelenting belief that hard work would carry me forward. And it did. Year after year, I worked my way up through the industry, never losing sight of where I was headed, no matter how difficult the road became. And the road was not always easy. Life tested me in the most profound ways — facing major personal challenges, navigating the weight of uncertainty, and enduring the heartbreaking loss of both of my parents in the wake of COVID. Grief is a heavy burden to carry, but I carried it — while still showing up, still leading, and still building toward my goals. I refused to let pain become my stopping point. I also faced my own medical challenges, undergoing treatments that pushed me to my absolute limits — and it was in those moments of vulnerability that I discovered my greatest strength. Those experiences didn't break me; they shaped me. They made me a more empathetic mentor, a more grounded leader, and a more authentic voice within my organization and across the industry. Every hardship I walked through became a lesson I could offer to others. Through it all, I never gave up. I kept my head down, my vision clear, and my purpose steady — building the business, developing world-class teams, and proving that perseverance, above all else, is the truest measure of success.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best work advice I was ever given has stayed with me throughout my entire career and continues to shape the way I approach every single day. I was told to look at each day as one task at a time — to resist the urge to become overwhelmed by the bigger picture and instead focus on what is directly in front of me. Take a breath, slow down, and simply put one foot in front of the other, because when you break life down into manageable steps, you begin to realize that you are capable of accomplishing far more than you ever imagined. Alongside this, I was encouraged to always look from within — to check in with myself, trust my instincts, and lead from a place of self-awareness rather than reaction. And perhaps most powerfully, I learned the value of thinking before I respond. In a world that rewards speed, pausing to reflect before speaking or acting is a quiet superpower that leads to better decisions, stronger relationships, and a deeper sense of clarity. These simple yet profound lessons have become the compass I return to whenever life feels uncertain or the path ahead seems unclear.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
If you are just beginning your journey in this industry, let me be the first to tell you — you have chosen an incredible time to start. The opportunities available to you today are vast, exciting, and full of potential. But make no mistake, real success in this business is built on dedication, adaptability, and an unwavering work ethic. You will find yourself balancing personal and professional responsibilities all at once, managing multiple clients, diverse brands, and a wide range of personalities — and while that can feel overwhelming at times, I promise you it is also one of the most rewarding experiences this career has to offer. My first piece of advice is simple — start from the ground up. Seek out a role that gives you a full, hands-on understanding of how this industry truly works, because there are lessons that can only be learned through lived experience, and those lessons will become your greatest asset. I also want to speak directly to the young women entering this space — seek out mentors, raise your hand, and shadow experienced professionals whenever you can. Learn not just the skills of the role, but the culture, the expectations, and the many career paths that are available to you. And above all else, invest in yourself. Build your personal brand with intention and nurture your professional network with authenticity, because at its core, this is a relationship-driven industry where trust and credibility open doors that talent alone cannot. Bring your expertise, bring your voice, and never underestimate the power of the unique perspective only you can offer.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
At the heart of both my professional and personal life lie a set of values that guide every decision I make and every step I take. Honesty forms the foundation of all my relationships and interactions, as I believe that trust is built through transparency and integrity. Flexibility allows me to adapt to life's ever-changing circumstances, turning challenges into opportunities rather than obstacles. Being fully present in every situation means I give my complete attention and energy to whatever is in front of me, whether it's a meaningful conversation, a critical task, or a quiet moment of reflection. A strong work ethic drives me to pour dedication and effort into everything I pursue, because I know that meaningful results are earned, not given. Above all, an unshakable belief in myself and a never-give-up attitude keep me moving forward even in the face of setbacks and doubt — because I understand that resilience is not just a trait, it is a choice I make every single day.
