The Personal Discovery Phase: Applying Business Analysis to Becoming

It has been over three months since I wrote an article.

And strangely, the only person keeping track of that timeline has been me.

Which made me wonder: Why haven't I written in so long? Was it because I had nothing to say? Was it because I lost my curiosity?

No.

Not because I stopped having thoughts.

Not because I stopped wanting to share.

But somewhere along the way, life became a project with too many competing requirements.

Deadlines.

Responsibilities.

Expectations.

Learning curves.

Conversations.

Decisions.

The things that needed immediate attention always seemed to move to the front of the queue. And slowly, quietly, one thing kept moving further down my backlog:

My own reflection.

Maybe that's something many of us experience—especially women.

We become so focused on meeting expectations, solving problems, and supporting everyone around us that we forget to pause and ask:

"Where am I in all of this?"

We measure our progress through invisible milestones, many of which we set for ourselves.

The next promotion.

The next achievement.

The next goal.

The next version of ourselves we believe we should have already become.

And when we don't meet those timelines, we convince ourselves that we're falling behind.

But what if we're not behind?

What if we're simply in discovery?

Discovery Is Not a Delay

As a Business Analyst, I've learned that every successful project begins with a discovery phase.

Before solutions are designed, we ask questions.

Before processes are changed, we understand the current state.

Before we build the future, we acknowledge what we don't yet know.

Discovery is not considered a delay.

It is considered a necessary step.

Yet when it comes to our own lives, we often expect ourselves to skip discovery and jump straight into execution.

We want the perfect roadmap.

The clear to-be state.

The certainty that everything will work before we even begin.

But what if uncertainty isn't a problem to solve?

What if it's a requirement?

In business analysis, uncertainty is not something we ignore.

We investigate it.

We document it.

We use it as a guide for what we need to learn next.

Maybe our personal uncertainty deserves the same patience.

Maybe the unanswered questions in our lives are not signs that we're failing.

Maybe they're simply areas waiting to be explored.

Sometimes we mistake being pulled in multiple directions for being lost.

But perhaps we're simply gathering requirements for the next version of ourselves.

We Become Experts at Analyzing Systems

The challenge is that many of us, especially women, are taught to constantly optimize.

Be productive.

Be dependable.

Be successful.

Have a plan.

Have a backup plan.

Always know what comes next.

We learn to carry responsibilities, manage expectations, and adapt to everyone else's needs.

But sometimes we forget to ask whether those expectations still align with who we're becoming.

We become experts at analyzing systems but rarely analyze ourselves with the same compassion.

We look for gaps, risks, and improvements in everything around us, yet forget that we, too, are evolving systems deserving of patience.

In my career, I would never consider incomplete requirements a failure.

I would call it discovery.

Perhaps even a lesson learned.

So why do I view my own unanswered questions as shortcomings?

Why do I treat the unknown chapters of my life as missing data instead of opportunities for exploration?

The truth is, growth rarely happens in a perfectly documented environment.

It happens through iterations.

Life Is Agile

Life is not a waterfall project where every requirement is gathered upfront and the final product is launched without changes.

Life is Agile.

We learn.

We adapt.

We refine.

We discover new requirements along the way.

Sometimes a requirement changes because we change.

Sometimes the destination evolves because we evolve.

And that doesn't mean the previous version was wrong.

It simply means we gained new information.

The version of ourselves we'll become five years from now may not even be something we can define today—and that's okay.

The goal is not to eliminate uncertainty.

The goal is to build enough trust within ourselves to navigate it.

Maybe It's Being Built in the Discovery Phase

So, after three months away from writing, I'm returning to this space.

Not because everything became less busy.

But because reflection is also part of the work.

Because discovering ourselves is just as important as discovering solutions.

Maybe the next great version of ourselves isn't waiting at the end of certainty.

Maybe it's being built in the discovery phase.

Maybe the only score that matters isn't how quickly we arrive, but how intentionally we evolve.

In my career as a Business Analyst, I’ve often heard peers say that a project without a “Discovery Phase” is destined to fail. Why, then, do we deny ourselves the same grace when navigating the discovery phases of our own identities?

I used to think of uncertainty as a system error, when it is actually the most critical requirement for growth.

Lately, I’ve been learning that the more we fight the unknown, the more “stuck” we are bound to feel. In the world of Business Analysis, we often treat uncertainty as a risk to be mitigated or a bug to be crushed. But if we apply a “Requirements Gathering” lens to our personal lives, we must treat uncertainty as a functional requirement—something the system needs in order to operate and evolve.

1. The Root Cause: Why Are We Fighting the Logic?

When we feel paralyzed by the unknown, we often misidentify the problem. I used to think of the anxiety of the fog as if it were a roadblock on the path. In our professional lives, we wouldn’t stop a project just because the documentation was incomplete; we would simply label it a “draft,” acknowledge that the “to-be” state is still being defined, and keep moving. We are comfortable with placeholders when they exist in a spreadsheet.

But in my personal life, I found myself mistaking a lack of clarity for a lack of capability. I was treating a temporary data gap as a permanent system failure.

I realized I was wasting my “processing power” on ghosts—simulating a thousand different “what-if” scenarios for a future that hasn’t even been coded yet. I was so busy trying to optimize a roadmap I couldn’t see that I forgot my ambiguity is actually a placeholder for my potential. In a Business Requirements Document, we don’t fear the “unknowns” section; we use it to define what we need to learn next. Why was I treating my own unknowns as a reason to shut down the whole operation?

If we are patient enough to sit with the discomfort and perform a root cause analysis—the classic “Five Whys”—we usually find that the root cause isn’t a lack of information. It’s a conflict of the heart.

The Internal Drill-Down:

The surface feeling: “I feel stuck because I don’t know what the next chapter looks like.”

Why? Because I’ve always been the one with the plan—the one who knows the way.

Why does that matter? Because I’m afraid that if I’m not achieving or moving, I’m disappearing.

Why? Because I’ve spent my life fulfilling a “requirement” to be the reliable one—the eldest daughter, the fixer, the analyst who never misses a detail.

Why? Because I’m terrified that if I don’t have a map, I’ll be seen as “broken” rather than “in transition.”

The root cause: Perhaps I am holding on to an old version of myself that no longer fits the person I am becoming.

By identifying this root cause, we realize that uncertainty isn’t the error—our resistance to it is. I am learning to remind myself that uncertainty is not failure, and it is certainly not a system failure. We are simply running a high-level recalibration. In my professional world, a system that pauses to ensure its integrity is considered reliable. Why should I expect anything less from myself?

2. Letting Go of the “Legacy Self”

The reason we fight uncertainty so hard is that we are protective of our legacy self—the version of us that felt safe, controlled, and understood. We try to “patch” the discomfort by staying busier, planning harder, or grasping for the one thing that will validate our worth.

In the world of data, “latency” describes the time it takes for a signal to travel. In our lives, we call it “waiting.” We feel like we are failing because we aren’t “loading” fast enough. But perhaps the system isn’t crashing—it’s simply rerouting to a destination we haven’t yet imagined.

The root cause of our pain isn’t the fog ahead of us; it’s our reluctance to let go of the dry land behind us. We are trying to carry the heavy furniture of our past into a future that requires us to travel light.

3. Trusting the Discovery

Uncertainty isn’t an error. It is a functional requirement—the space needed for the system to evolve.

If we want to move into the next version of our lives, we have to stop debugging the waiting and start trusting the discovery. We must accept that we are currently “Version 1.5”—a work in progress that is functional, valuable, and exactly where it needs to be.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve treated my life like a waterfall project for years. I tried to gather every requirement for my future before allowing myself to move, expecting a single, massive launch where everything would be perfect and permanent.

But it’s time to admit that life is actually Agile.

We live in sprints. Just when we think we’ve reached the final “to-be” state, the market shifts, our hearts change, and a new set of requirements emerges. This isn’t a sign that we’ve failed or returned to square one—it’s simply the next iteration.

The goal isn’t to eliminate the fog once and for all; it’s to build a system flexible enough to handle the next reroute. We don’t need a map that never changes—we need a compass that works even when the destination is still being defined.

But as we hand the keys of our reasoning to algorithms and our nourishment to the microwave, we have to ask: if we are outsourcing the doing, are we also accidentally sacrificing the being?

We have gained hours of efficiency only to spend them on the digital equivalent of a 2-minute snack. We are becoming masters of the output while becoming strangers to the effort, losing the very depth that is supposed to fill the time we’ve saved.

We aren't looking for a life that is "instant"; we are looking for a life that is steeped.

This creates a profound identity crisis. If your digital agent is managing your network, drafting your most important communications, and optimizing your daily choices, your life becomes a series of automated echoes.

We risk becoming "digital silhouettes"—refined, high-performing outlines of people who no longer know how to navigate a world without a prompt. We look like we are achieving, but the internal "chef"—the part of us that experiments, fails, and tastes the nuances of life—is being replaced by a pre-packaged version of ourselves. When life becomes too "smooth," we lose the jagged edges that actually define our unique shape.

I am not suggesting we avoid AI, or even the occasional 2-minute noodle. But I believe that how we use them, and when we use them, is the key. We can learn to leverage both without losing our true selves in the process.

IV. Reclaiming the "Slow Burn"

For the woman seeking true influence in an age of automation, the challenge is no longer how to move faster, but how to remain deliberate. We must learn to treat AI as a high-speed tool without letting it become the architect of our identity.

Influence is not found in the volume of your automated output; it is found in the depth of the flavor you bring to the table. It is found in the conversations that don’t have a "smart-reply" button and the strategic visions that require months of "inefficient" deep thought. When we allow ourselves to sit with the discomfort of a slow process, we aren't being "left behind" by technology; we are cultivating the very substance that technology can never replicate.

We need to stop treating our lives—and our leadership—like a 2-minute snack.
