Her Story
About Norma
Norma Ayala is an Agency Sales Manager in the insurance industry, bringing more than two decades of experience to her role overseeing business-to-business sales across half of the state of Texas. Her responsibilities span appointing agencies to represent her company's products, delivering hands-on training, monitoring production and commission performance, and driving new business through consistent prospecting and cold calling. Norma recently made a personal shift as well, relocating from city life to a quieter, rural setting, a change that has brought added clarity and focus to both her professional and personal outlook.Norma’s path into sales leadership was built on a foundation of varied, ground-level experience. She entered the industry working in a claims office file room, later earning her adjuster's license and progressing through underwriting, customer service, and marketing before transitioning into sales. This cross-functional journey gave her a comprehensive understanding of how insurance operates at every level, from policy language to client relationships. She holds a business degree from a trade school, completed two years of university coursework, and maintains credentials as a licensed adjuster and general lines agent with P&C coverage. Beyond the numbers, Norma sees her work as fundamentally about people, viewing each policy and partnership as a chance to offer clients real security and peace of mind. She is a firm believer in continuous growth, encouraging newcomers to the field to explore multiple functions within insurance rather than settling into a single role too early. Looking ahead, she aims to advance into a regional leadership position and ultimately hopes to own her own agency, continuing a career defined by curiosity, adaptability, and a genuine enthusiasm for the industry.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Norma
01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to a genuine passion for insurance and a real enjoyment of the work I do every day. Starting my career in claims gave me hands-on, practical experience that helped me understand policy language from the ground up. I've also made continuous learning a priority, pursuing the professional licenses needed to grow and take on new responsibilities throughout my career.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I'd tell young women entering this industry that insurance requires a specific temperament along with solid legal and policy knowledge, and that starting out in claims can be an incredibly valuable foundation. Bring genuine passion to the work, explore different areas within insurance to find where you fit best, and pursue broader licensing, like general lines, to open up more opportunities. If college isn't the right path for you, that's okay: you can start at the bottom, work your way up, and build a strong career through trade credentials and industry licenses.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field is prospecting, cold calling in particular can be tough, and licensing requirements, especially here in Texas, are quite rigorous. At the same time, I see tremendous opportunity in the sheer breadth of roles available in insurance. Whether it's claims, underwriting, risk management, product, or agency work, there are many paths to explore, strong job stability, and real potential to move into agency ownership or regional leadership.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that matter most to me are passion for the work, perseverance, and a commitment to continuous learning. I also place a lot of importance on mentoring and inspiring others, and I believe strongly in not limiting yourself to just one path throughout your career.
