I Didn't Wait for Someone to See My Worth. I Built a Business on It.

I'm Peggy Lee. I own a ghostwriting business called Innovative Write Angle, where I write email newsletters, educational email courses, LinkedIn content, customer success case studies, video scripts, and white papers for CPA firms, financial advisors, women-owned businesses, health and wellness professionals, corporate refugees, and subcontractors.

Before I ever wrote a word for a client, I spent almost 40 years as a bookkeeper and accountant, including working in forensic accounting and IRS audit resolution. For 18 of those years, I ran that firm alongside a second business: an award-winning portrait photography studio.

I like to say I've spent my career translating: numbers into clarity for frightened business owners, vulnerability into confidence for women in front of my camera, and now, expertise into words that sound like the person who hired me—not like me.

But I didn't arrive here on a straight line, and I think the winding part of the story matters more than the tidy version.

I grew up in a house that did not teach me I was capable of much of anything. It was not a gentle childhood. There was dysfunction and trauma in that home that I carried with me for a long time—the kind of weight that follows you quietly into adulthood, even after you think you've set it down.

I spent years in therapy learning how to separate what I was told about myself from what was really true. That work built something in me I didn't expect. It made me a listener. It made me someone who could sit across from a person in crisis, whether that was a client staring down an IRS audit or a woman standing in front of my camera feeling exposed for the first time, and stay steady with them.

That steadiness carried me through decades of running two demanding businesses at once. It carried me through building a bookkeeping practice known for walking clients through the scariest financial moments of their lives. It carried me through building a photography studio that won national recognition for helping women see themselves differently.

And then, in 2022, I retired both businesses and made a decision that surprised almost everyone who knew me. I moved to Arizona after a lifetime in Colorado, and I started over.

Starting over after sixty is not something anyone prepares you for.

I went looking for work the way most people do after a career change, and I ran headfirst into something I had heard about but never fully felt directed at me. The people doing the hiring were, more often than not, half my age or younger. I watched decades of hard-won expertise get quietly discounted because of perceptions on a résumé.

I will not pretend that didn't sting.

After all, I have skills, darn it! Many skills. It doesn't seem to matter.

But I have never been someone who waits around for permission, and somewhere in that frustration, a much simpler idea showed up:

If no one was going to hire me, I would hire myself.

That idea became Innovative Write Angle.

I have been writing my entire life—for myself, for my employers, for my clients, and now for myself again. I went back to school, in a sense, earning certifications in newsletters, ghostwriting, copywriting, and white papers, sharpening a lifetime of business writing into a real craft.

I built a business around the exact thing decades of accounting and photography had already trained me to do without my realizing it: understand a person's problem well enough to speak for them convincingly.

My clients are not hiring a writer who learned their industry from a course. They are hiring someone who spent decades inside the actual financial anxieties, the actual audits, and the actual fear and pride that come with running a small business because I lived that work myself.

If you are reading this while you are in the middle of your own reinvention, or while you are staring down a version of yourself that the world has decided is too old, too late, or too far outside the lines, I want you to hear this from someone who has been exactly there.

Whatever built your resilience—whether it was a hard childhood, a hard industry, or a hard year—is not separate from your value.

It is the source of it.

The people who dismiss you because of your age or your unconventional path are, without realizing it, dismissing the very thing that makes you dangerous in the best way.

You have already survived harder things than a cold email or a closed door.

I did not wait for someone to see my worth.

I decided to see it myself, and I built a business on it.

That is still the best decision I have ever made.
