About Rana
Rana Ismail is an Assistant Manager of Operations at Southwest Airlines, where she leads daily airport operations with a strong focus on safety, operational efficiency, employee well-being, and exceptional customer service. With approximately seven years of experience in the aviation industry, she oversees cross-functional teams, monitors operational performance, supports regulatory compliance, and coordinates resources to ensure smooth airport operations. Her expertise spans aviation operations management, ramp operations, employee leadership, and process improvement, allowing her to build collaborative teams that consistently deliver operational excellence. Rana's aviation career began in frontline customer service and ramp operations after being recruited while working in the hospitality industry. She gained valuable experience with American Airlines before advancing into supervisory roles with UPS, where she managed cargo operations, hazardous materials compliance, staffing, and logistics across multiple locations. She later joined Southwest Airlines as a Ramp Supervisor, leading unionized teams and directing aircraft turn operations before being promoted to Assistant Manager of Operations following the completion of her Bachelor of Science in Aviation Management from San José State University, with a minor in Business. Throughout her career, she has remained committed to continuous learning, leadership development, and improving both team performance and operational outcomes. 01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to the incredible support of the people around me, especially my mother, whose encouragement gave me the confidence to overcome challenges and believe in my abilities. She continually motivated me to prove to myself what I was capable of achieving, both academically and professionally. I also owe much of my growth to the mentors who encouraged me throughout my career, reminding me not to be intimidated as a woman in a traditionally male-dominated industry. Their guidance, combined with my determination to keep learning and improving, has helped shape my career.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've received is to remain humble, welcome feedback without taking it personally, and continuously evaluate myself to identify opportunities for growth. I've learned that mentors can provide valuable guidance and help develop your skills, but ultimately, career advancement depends on your own initiative. Building meaningful professional relationships, networking, and taking the time to understand the work of those around you are essential for earning respect and creating opportunities for long-term success.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice is to stay humble, be persistent, and never allow a male-dominated environment to discourage you from pursuing your goals. Focus on developing specialized skills that make you valuable in the industry while continuing your education whenever possible. Seek mentors who can help guide your development, but remember that you must also advocate for yourself, build strong professional relationships, and actively create opportunities through networking. Believe in your abilities, remain open to learning, and continue moving forward despite challenges.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in aviation today is the limited number of advancement opportunities, as many organizations are restructuring and expecting fewer employees to perform broader responsibilities. At the same time, there are significant opportunities for professionals who invest in networking, build strong industry relationships, and develop specialized expertise in high-demand areas such as engineering, mechanics, or aviation operations. Continuing education and professional development can also create additional pathways for career growth.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
Fairness is the value that guides me most in both my professional and personal life. I believe it is important to evaluate situations thoughtfully rather than simply following procedures without question, and I am willing to speak up when something is not right. I also value humility, integrity, accountability, and listening to others with an open mind. Taking care of employees, fostering respectful relationships, and creating a supportive work environment are principles that influence every decision I make as a leader.
