Her Story

About Roxanne

Roxanne Zhilo has always believed that the most meaningful work begins with understanding people. Behind every business decision, professional challenge, and ambitious endeavor are individuals with aspirations, responsibilities, and something they are working hard to build.

That understanding has shaped not only her approach to practicing law, but also her philosophy on leadership, relationships, and success.

Never one to believe that there is only one path to achievement, Roxanne has built her career around intellectual curiosity, independent thinking, and the courage to challenge conventional expectations. Founding Zhilo Law was an extension of that philosophy, allowing her to create a practice that reflects her professional vision and personal values.

At the heart of Roxanne's work is a genuine appreciation for human connection. She believes that the strongest professional relationships are built on authenticity, mutual respect, and a willingness to invest in the success of others. Her background in strategic communications has further reinforced her belief that understanding people is often just as important as understanding the issues they face.

As a woman navigating entrepreneurship and the legal profession, Roxanne is particularly passionate about encouraging women to embrace their individuality rather than conform to traditional expectations of leadership. She believes that confidence and authenticity are not competing qualities, and that women should never have to diminish who they are to establish their credibility.

For Roxanne, success extends well beyond professional recognition or financial achievement. It is measured by the relationships cultivated, the challenges overcome, the opportunities created, and the positive impact left on others.

She continues to approach both her professional and personal journey with curiosity, determination, and the belief that meaningful success is not simply about what one accomplishes, but also about what one makes possible for others.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Roxanne

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a combination of resilience, curiosity, determination, and the relationships I've built along the way. I've never been afraid to ask questions, challenge conventional thinking, or take a different path when I believed there was a better way forward.

Equally important has been my ability to connect with people, understand what matters to them, and recognize opportunities to create value. I genuinely care about the people I work with and believe that trust, authenticity, and meaningful relationships are among the greatest assets anyone can develop.

I've also learned that success rarely follows a straight line. Some of the most valuable lessons come from setbacks, unexpected challenges, and moments that require us to reinvent ourselves.

Ultimately, I believe success comes from remaining true to your values, being willing to do the difficult work, surrounding yourself with good people, and never losing sight of the impact you can have on others.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

One of the most valuable lessons I've learned is that you don't have to follow someone else's blueprint for success. What worked for someone else may not be the right path for you, and that's perfectly okay.

It's important to seek guidance, learn from people you respect, and remain open to different perspectives. But ultimately, you have to trust your own judgment and have the courage to make decisions that align with your values and vision.

Some of the most meaningful opportunities in my career have come from questioning conventional wisdom, taking calculated risks, and being willing to do things differently.

Success isn't about becoming someone else's version of accomplished. It's about having the confidence to define what success means to you and the determination to pursue it.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Don't wait for someone to give you permission to take up space, share your ideas, or pursue opportunities you haven't been formally invited to explore. You belong in the room just as much as anyone else, and you don't need to have every answer to contribute something valuable.

Find mentors who will challenge you, advocates who will champion you, and colleagues who genuinely want to see you succeed. Build relationships across industries, generations, and backgrounds. Your network should be more than a collection of contacts. It should be a community of people with whom you exchange knowledge, opportunities, and support.

Learn your craft, develop your judgment, and never underestimate the importance of understanding the business and human dimensions of the law. Technical expertise matters, but so do communication, emotional intelligence, and the ability to see the bigger picture.

Most importantly, don't confuse professionalism with conformity. You can be intelligent, ambitious, compassionate, outspoken, feminine, and formidable all at once. You do not have to sacrifice your authenticity to earn respect.

And as you advance, remember to reach back and open doors for the women coming behind you. There is room for more than one woman to succeed.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

I believe one of the greatest challenges facing the legal profession is also one of its greatest opportunities: the need to rethink how legal services are delivered and how attorneys create value for their clients.

Artificial intelligence, emerging technologies, and rapidly evolving business models are transforming the way organizations operate. The legal profession must evolve alongside them. While technology can improve efficiency and accessibility, it cannot replace sound judgment, strategic thinking, ethical responsibility, or the human relationships at the heart of effective legal counsel.

I also see tremendous opportunity in shifting the perception of attorneys from professionals who are called when something goes wrong to strategic partners who help businesses make better decisions before problems arise. Particularly for small and growing businesses, access to proactive legal guidance can make an enormous difference.

Another important challenge is creating meaningful opportunities for women and other professionals whose talents have historically been overlooked. Although progress has been made, access to leadership, mentorship, and influential professional networks remains uneven.

Ultimately, I believe the future of the legal profession belongs to those who embrace innovation without sacrificing integrity, recognize that legal expertise is only part of the value they provide, and understand that the strongest professional relationships are built on trust, communication, and a genuine investment in their clients' success.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Authenticity, loyalty, compassion, and meaningful human connection are among the values that guide both my professional and personal life. I believe that how we treat people matters just as much as what we accomplish, and that our character is often revealed in the moments when doing the right thing is neither easy nor convenient.

Relationships have always been central to who I am. I value showing up for people, keeping my word, and building connections rooted in genuine care, mutual respect, and trust. Whether I'm advising a client, supporting a friend, or mentoring another professional, I want people to know that my investment in their well-being and success is sincere.

I also place tremendous value on independence, intellectual curiosity, and personal growth. I believe in questioning assumptions, remaining open to different perspectives, and having the courage to stand by my convictions, even when doing so means taking a less conventional path.

Above all, I believe in living with purpose and generosity. Success means very little if it comes at the expense of our humanity. I want to build a meaningful career and a fulfilling life, but equally important, I want to leave people, relationships, and communities better than I found them.
