Her Story

About Samya

Samya Alasad is a creative director and marketing strategist with eight years in the field. She’s equal parts analytical and creative, which in practice means she’s the person handed the messy version and asked to make it make sense. She starts with human behavior, what actually moves a decision, then builds the creative around it, rather than making something attractive and hoping it converts.

Based in Dallas, Texas, she works with business owners to sharpen what they’re saying and grow their revenue, and leads marketing for Dallas Street Feeders, a nonprofit feeding unhoused neighbors.

She emphasizes the importance of authenticity in marketing, particularly as AI continues to expand, and advises against letting the pursuit of perfection hinder progress.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Samya

01What do you attribute your success to?

Honestly, a refusal to wait until I felt ready. I started taking on clients before I had the title, the portfolio, or the confidence, and I learned in public, which was uncomfortable and also the fastest education available.

The other half is that I’ve never treated creative and analytical as separate skills. Most people in this field pick one and outsource the other. Being able to sit with the data and then art-direct the answer is the reason clients keep me around after the first project.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Don't let perfect get in the way of good. I struggle with trying to make every idea perfectly crafted before beginning, but a mentor told me to give yourself the opportunity to be good and then continue getting better from there.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Do what you can, not what you can’t. Most of the stalling I see comes from waiting on the budget, the title, the team, the perfect plan, the motivation, etc. Those rarely arrive. Make the version you can make with what’s actually in front of you; it’s usually most of the way there, and it exists, which is the whole difference.

That applies to your voice, too. You don’t need permission to have an opinion about the work. A lot of us are trained to be the most agreeable person in the room, and it reads as having no perspective, which is the one thing this industry pays for. And it applies to your body of work: client work disappears into someone else’s brand, and nobody is going to assign you your own. You build it with what you have, now.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest area of opportunity is leaning into authenticity. In a world where AI is expanding, humans crave authenticity more, especially in marketing. Understand people on a personal level before marketing to them.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Consistency, authenticity, and integrity although I define them narrowly, because those words get used loosely enough to mean nothing. Consistency is holding the same standard when the project isn’t exciting and nobody’s watching. Authenticity is refusing to make something I wouldn’t put my name on. Integrity is being the same person in a client meeting, on a volunteer shift, and in the group chat. I’d add ihsan, an Islamic principle of doing your work with excellence as if it’s seen, even when it isn’t. It’s why I care about details no one will consciously notice.
