About Sara

Sara Rubens is a corporate keynote speaker, author, garden coach, and founder of Seed to Sanctuary, based in Davidson, North Carolina. With a career spanning nearly five decades across corporate America and the nonprofit sector, she has built a unique platform centered on the connection between personal growth, resilience, and the natural world. After a pivotal career transition in 2021, Sara launched Seed to Sanctuary to help individuals and organizations understand how the principles of gardening—clarity, care, patience, and intentional growth—can transform the way people live and work.

Through her signature keynote, The Garden-Centered Life, Sara inspires audiences to cultivate sustainable performance, stronger relationships, and greater well-being by creating the right conditions for growth. She combines storytelling, leadership insights, and the wisdom of the garden to address modern workplace challenges such as burnout, change, and disengagement. Her work supports corporate teams, leadership groups, wellness programs, and community organizations by providing practical strategies for building resilience, improving communication, and fostering meaningful connection.

Sara is also the author of A Love Letter for the Garden-Centered Life: 52 Weeks of Growing, Gathering, and Living a Well-Tended Life and specializes in garden design, raised-bed kitchen gardens, garden coaching, and sustainable living practices. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Speech Communication and Organizational Development from the University of Washington and is a certified garden coach through Gardenary, Inc.. Her work has been featured in publications and media outlets including Southern Living, Real Simple, Martha Stewart Living, and CBS-affiliated programs. Through Seed to Sanctuary, Sara continues to help people and organizations grow with intention—one seed at a time.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Sara

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to perseverance. Staying committed, pushing through challenges, and continuing to move forward even when things are difficult have been key factors in achieving my goals.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is to avoid spending so much time making a living that I forget to truly live. It has reminded me of the importance of maintaining balance, valuing personal experiences, and making time for the things that bring purpose and fulfillment beyond work.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering the industry is to focus on one strategic effort at a time. Give each initiative your full attention, see it through from beginning to end, and complete it thoroughly before moving on to the next opportunity. By building on each accomplishment, you create a strong foundation for continued growth and success.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is finding reliable contract labor. Having dependable and skilled people is essential to maintaining quality and supporting growth. At the same time, the opportunities are endless because there will always be a need for growth and cultivation—everyone needs to grow something, whether it’s a business, a product, or an idea.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are integrity and honesty. I believe in building trust through my actions, being true to my word, and treating others with respect. My relationships and family are also incredibly important to me, and I strive to maintain strong connections with the people who matter most.
