About Sarah
Sarah Alizadeh-Shabdiz is a mechanical engineer based in Boston, Massachusetts. She earned her bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Boston University and has conducted robotics research in multiple labs there, resulting in more than four publications. In addition to her engineering role, Sarah has tutored since September 2019, initially as a high school sophomore and now serving high school and college students in SAT and ACT preparation as well as calculus, chemistry, and physics. She works with Han Tutoring and Test Prep and runs her own free mentorship program that assists students from underprivileged communities with college applications, internships, and laboratory positions. Sarah has developed a website named FigureForge that helps STEM students create publication or lab ready graphs in seconds without coding.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to a combination of persistence, curiosity, and a willingness to learn from challenges. I set high expectations for myself and am not afraid to put in the time needed to understand something or improve my work. Whether in academics, research, or professional experiences, I try to take initiative, ask questions, and learn from the people around me. I also see setbacks as opportunities to adjust my approach rather than reasons to give up. I also attribute much of my success to the example set by my parents, who immigrated to the United States and built successful careers in engineering and medicine. Their hard work, perseverance, and dedication have shaped my own work ethic and motivated me to make the most of the opportunities available to me.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I’ve received is to never be afraid to ask questions and to take advantage of opportunities, even when I don’t feel completely ready for them. Some of my most valuable experiences have come from stepping outside my comfort zone, learning as I go, and being willing to make mistakes along the way. One example was when I reached out to my Linear Algebra TA to ask about opportunities to get involved in research. That conversation ultimately connected me with Professor Andrew Sabelhaus and led to my first research position in the Soft Robotics Control Lab. That experience showed me that simply taking the initiative to reach out can open doors that I would never have known were available otherwise.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would encourage young women entering engineering to be confident in their abilities and not be afraid to take up space in environments where they may be underrepresented. Ask questions, share your ideas, seek out mentors, and pursue opportunities. Engineering is about learning and problem solving, so you are not expected to have every answer from the beginning. I would also encourage them to build a strong network of peers and mentors who support their goals and challenge them to grow.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I think one of the biggest opportunities in engineering right now is the rapid growth of robotics, automation, and artificial intelligence(AI). AI is changing the way engineers approach everything: from design and simulation to manufacturing, data analysis, and optimization. It can help engineers evaluate more design possibilities, identify patterns in large amounts of data, and automate repetitive tasks, allowing more time to focus on creative and complex problems. At the same time, AI presents new challenges. Engineers need to understand the limitations of these tools and be able to verify their results rather than simply relying on the output. There are also important questions surrounding ethics, safety, and how AI will change traditional engineering roles. I think engineers who learn how to combine strong technical fundamentals with AI tools will have a major opportunity to shape how these technologies are used in the future.
Although, AI can negatively affect tutoring when students use it as a shortcut to get answers rather than working through problems and developing their own problem solving skills. Over reliance on AI can also reduce the value of the personal interaction tutors provide, where they can recognize confusion, adjust their teaching approach, and help students build confidence rather than simply giving them a solution.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me are kindness, respect, hard work, integrity, and perseverance. I believe that how you treat people is just as important as the quality of the work you produce. I try to approach everyone with kindness and respect, regardless of their position, background, or experience. I also place a lot of importance on being dependable and following through on my commitments. In tutoring and research especially, progress often comes from collaboration, so being someone others can trust and enjoy working with is extremely important to me. In my personal life, I try to carry those same values into my relationships with friends, family, and the people I meet. Ultimately, I want my success to be defined not only by what I accomplish, but also by the way I treat people and the positive impact I have on those around me.
