Her Story
About Sarah
Sarah Planchak is a biomedical engineering PhD candidate at Brown University, where she conducts research focused on tissue and cell technologies, regenerative medicine, and advanced in vitro models. She earned her bioengineering degree and integrated master’s education from the University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom, building a strong interdisciplinary foundation in biology, physics, mathematics, and engineering. Inspired by a family friend’s experience with a heart transplant and related complications, Sarah developed a passion for regenerative medicine and the potential of cellular technologies to improve patient outcomes.
At Brown University, Sarah works as a PhD Research Scientist in the Tripathi Lab, leading research involving gentle tissue and organoid dissociation, micro-tissue and organoid culture, and methods designed to preserve native tissue biology while reducing experimental perturbations. She also serves as a Guest Editor for JoVE, where she helps develop and curate a topical collection on methods for preserving native tissue structure and biology in regenerative medicine. Her industry experience includes work with BigHat Biosciences, where she developed and optimized laboratory protocols involving antibody characterization, bio-layer interferometry, and automated laboratory systems.
Sarah is particularly interested in transitioning from academia into a small company or startup where she can contribute across research, project management, laboratory development, and other areas of the organization. She hopes to apply her expertise in regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, and cellular engineering toward research that can ultimately translate into meaningful therapeutic applications. Sarah credits her supportive family, mentors, and persistent work ethic for her progress and is committed to continuing to grow as a scientist and leader. Outside of research, she enjoys hiking, skiing, scuba diving, weight training, and participating in community theater and the performing arts.
