Ten minutes with Sarah

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to tenacity, initiative, and adaptability. I've built my career by staying curious, embracing difficult challenges, and never losing my commitment to learning. After earning my Associate's degree in Business Administration in 2020, I began my career in accounts payable. Rather than staying within the boundaries of my role, I sought out opportunities that challenged me to grow, taking on increasingly complex responsibilities and learning every aspect of the work I could. That same drive has shaped every step of my journey. While continuing my education, I pursued opportunities that expanded my knowledge and strengthened my ability to serve others through sound financial stewardship.

Today, I oversee federal grants management for a nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center, where I have the privilege of helping ensure critical funding is managed responsibly to support healthcare services within our communities.

I believe meaningful leadership isn't defined by a title, but by a willingness to solve problems, improve systems, and support the people around you. As I continue pursuing my Master of Accountancy, I'm fortunate to have the unwavering support of my family, who have encouraged me through every challenge and celebrated every milestone. They are my greatest motivation. More than anything, I want my children to see that success isn't determined by where you begin, but by your willingness to keep learning, persevere through setbacks, and believe in your own potential. If they grow up knowing that hard work, resilience, and curiosity can open doors, then I'll have accomplished something far greater than any title or degree. My hope is to leave every organization stronger than I found it while showing my children that with dedication and perseverance, they can achieve anything they set their minds to.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received came from one of my former supervisors, who encouraged me to "leave everything better than you found it." That simple principle has guided my leadership and career, reminding me that every role is an opportunity to create meaningful, lasting change. I believe true success is measured not only by personal achievement but by the positive impact you have on others.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I encourage young women entering my industry to advocate confidently for themselves and never underestimate the value of their contributions. Leadership opportunities come from consistently demonstrating excellence, embracing continuous learning, and having the courage to speak up for yourself and your ideas. Most importantly, prioritize self-care, because sustainable success is only possible when you take care of your own well-being first.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges I see in my career is navigating change while maintaining accountability and integrity. Healthcare, nonprofit organizations, and federal grant management are constantly evolving through new regulations, funding requirements, and operational demands. Success requires more than technical knowledge—it requires adaptability, collaboration, and the ability to help organizations improve without losing sight of their mission.

I've learned that meaningful change isn't always easy. It often involves asking difficult questions, improving long-standing processes, and finding solutions that balance compliance with the practical realities organizations face every day. Those experiences have strengthened my problem-solving skills and reinforced my belief that continuous learning is essential.

Rather than viewing change as an obstacle, I see it as an opportunity to grow, strengthen organizations, and ultimately improve the services they provide to the communities they serve.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that matter most to me are honesty, integrity, compassion, and family. I am passionate about making a meaningful difference in the lives of others through my work while remaining fully present for my family. Balancing graduate school, my career, and motherhood has taught me the importance of perseverance, healthy boundaries, and continuous growth. I firmly believe that you cannot pour from an empty cup, so I prioritize my well-being to ensure I can serve others with excellence, purpose, and balance.
