Leadership isn’t loud
Leadership is built in quiet moments, one decision of integrity at a time.
The house was quiet.
My children had been asleep for hours, and the only sound left was the steady rhythm of my keyboard. The glow of my computer illuminated stacks of grant reports, reconciliations, and handwritten notes spread across my desk. Somewhere among thousands of transactions was an answer I hadn't found yet, and I wasn't ready to stop looking.
As accountants, we're often taught that numbers tell a story. Over time, I've learned that's only partly true.
People tell the story.
Behind every line on a financial report is a decision. Behind every decision is a person. In my work with federal grants, those decisions can affect access to healthcare, strengthen communities, and shape opportunities for people I may never meet. The numbers matter because people matter.
As I worked into the early hours of the morning, I found myself thinking about leadership.
Not because I was working late, but because moments like these rarely appear on résumés or in acceptance speeches. They are quiet moments. Ordinary moments. The kind that ask no one to notice, yet reveal something about who we are.
For much of my life, I believed leadership began with a title. I thought influence came with authority, and success was measured by promotions, degrees, or accomplishments.
Experience has a way of reshaping those ideas.
Some of the strongest leaders I've known have never introduced themselves as leaders. They are the people who ask one more question when something doesn't feel right. They admit when they don't know the answer and have the humility to learn. They accept responsibility without seeking recognition and understand that doing something well is reason enough to do it well.
I've come to believe that leadership doesn't begin when someone follows you.
It begins the moment someone can trust you.
Trust isn't built through grand gestures. It's built quietly, one decision at a time. It grows every time we choose integrity over convenience, responsibility over recognition, and truth over the easier answer. Long before anyone remembers our accomplishments, they remember whether they could depend on our character.
That lesson has changed the way I think about my work.
Reconciling an account isn't simply about making the numbers balance. It's about honoring the responsibility that comes with stewarding resources entrusted to us. Sometimes leadership looks like making a difficult decision. Other times, it looks like refusing to settle for an easy answer because accuracy matters.
Those moments are rarely celebrated.
Most people will never know they happened.
Yet I have come to believe they are the moments that define us.
There will always be another report to complete, another reconciliation to review, another decision that asks us to choose between what is easy and what is right.
Most of those moments will pass unnoticed.
But I have come to believe those quiet moments reveal our character more than the visible ones ever could.
Perhaps the truest measure of leadership isn't whether people choose to follow us.
It's whether we've become someone they can trust.
