Q

What do you attribute your success to?

My success is rooted in service. I believe leadership is not defined by title, but by a consistent commitment to people and mission.

My experience serving in and alongside the federal government instilled a strong sense of discipline, accountability, and purpose, principles I bring into every organization, engagement, and leadership role. I have learned that meaningful success is never achieved alone; it is built through high-performing teams grounded in trust, clear communication, and shared commitment.

A key driver of my approach is a willingness to engage in honest assessment of organizations, strategies, and myself. I prioritize clarity over comfort, asking the right questions, identifying gaps, and challenging assumptions to unlock growth and drive meaningful outcomes.

Equally important are the relationships I build. Lasting impact is rooted in trust, and I invest deeply in the people I work with, including clients, colleagues, and partners, because strong relationships are the foundation of sustained success.

For me, success is not a destination; it is the result of aligning purpose, preparation, and people to achieve outcomes that matter.

Q

What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The most impactful career advice I have received has come not from formal settings, but from the people who have invested in my growth along the way.

A guiding principle from my father, a retired Army officer, has shaped my leadership approach: look, listen, and learn in all you do. It is a discipline I carry into every environment, prioritizing observation, active listening, and continuous learning as the foundation for sound decision-making and effective leadership.

I have also benefited from the steady support of my husband, who has consistently encouraged me to pursue opportunities with confidence and to trust in my own potential.

Throughout my career, I have been fortunate to learn from exceptional mentors, including Michelle Gardner-Inch and Stacey Redman, whose guidance and strategic insight have influenced how I approach growth, leadership, and accountability.

The common thread across all of these experiences is the power of relationships. The most valuable advice is built on trust and a willingness to invest in others. That principle continues to shape how I lead and how I support the development of those around me.

Q

What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is simple: you belong here. Approach your career with confidence, discipline, and a clear sense of purpose, and do not allow external doubt to shape your trajectory.

Focus on building a strong foundation early. Consistency, work ethic, and a commitment to excellence will carry you further than talent alone. Stay focused on long-term goals, even when progress feels incremental.

Setbacks are inevitable. What matters is how you respond. Use challenges as opportunities to grow, recalibrate, and strengthen your approach rather than as reasons to step back from your ambitions.

Be intentional about the relationships you build. Seek mentors who will challenge and support you, and remain open to both learning from others and investing in those coming behind you. Strong networks are critical to sustained success.

Commit to continuous learning. The most effective leaders are those who remain adaptable, curious, and willing to evolve with their environment.

Above all, lead with authenticity. Your perspective and experience are strengths. Bringing your full voice to the table is not only valuable, it is necessary.

Q

What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the most pressing challenges organizations face today is navigating an increasingly complex and competitive government contracting environment. Rapid shifts in budget priorities, evolving regulatory requirements, and heightened expectations for measurable outcomes are raising the bar across the board. For many organizations, particularly small and mid-sized firms, sustaining growth while adapting to this pace of change requires both agility and strategic focus.

At the same time, the greatest risk is often internal. Organizations that default to maintaining the status quo or waiting for conditions to stabilize will find themselves at a disadvantage. The environment is not reverting to prior norms; it is redefining itself in real time. Those who delay action risk losing relevance in a landscape that continues to evolve without them.

Organizations that will lead in this environment are those that take a deliberate and forward-looking approach to growth. They are making disciplined, strategic decisions aligned to long-term objectives, even amid uncertainty. They recognize that periods of disruption are not a signal to pause, but a critical window to strengthen positioning and accelerate progress.

There is also significant opportunity for those willing to act with intention. Organizations that are expanding capabilities, forming strategic partnerships, and diversifying across mission areas are better positioned to compete. Demand remains strong in areas such as emergency management, operational readiness, and federal infrastructure, particularly for organizations that can align mission expertise with innovative solutions.

Ultimately, sustained success will come to organizations that remain proactive, resist complacency, and continue to execute with clarity and purpose. Competitive advantage is built by those who are willing to evolve ahead of the landscape, not react to it.

Q

What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I lead with integrity, accountability, and consistency. I believe that standards do not shift based on visibility. Whether in the boardroom, in competition, or at home, I hold to the principle that how you do anything is how you do everything.

A core philosophy I return to, reflected in my book Before Your Applause, is the importance of being prepared, present, and positioned. Meaningful success is not accidental. It is built through disciplined preparation, intentional focus in the moment, and strategic alignment with opportunity. These principles have guided every significant milestone in my career.

I also define success by the impact I have on others. Supporting the growth and achievement of those around me is central to my leadership approach. Outside of my professional work, I am committed to health, fitness, and community engagement. Endurance events such as Tough Mudder, the Army Ten-Miler, and Savage Race reinforce a belief I carry into leadership: resilience, both mental and physical, is foundational to sustained performance.

Mentorship, community involvement, and continuous growth remain priorities, grounded by my role as a parent. My daughter serves as a constant reminder of the importance of modeling these values and preparing the next generation to lead with purpose, clarity, and intention.
