Her Story
About Shawny
I started my travel business in February of this year, though I had dabbled in it in the past. When I came across the opportunity to do it again, we kind of did a rabbit hole and decided to give it a shot. Prior to this, I worked for a merchandising company called Acosta and Mosaic for many years, and I also worked in the haunted house and horror industry for about 10 years as a single mom. I'm very artistic and creative, and people got to know who I am through my work in that industry. I still have people from the past that like to purchase art from time to time. I've also done resale on eBay, taken in social media contracts, and done some graphic design on the side. I had been applying for remote positions religiously since April of last year, trying to find something I could do flexibly after I lost a family member, and that's when I came across this travel opportunity.

Ten minutes with Shawny
01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
My grandmother taught me about learning how to let go - letting go of people, whether it's personal or professional. Don't waste their time and don't let them waste yours. Just let them be who they are and move forward anyway. I also learned from Yolanda Hunter, who owned a business incubator when I lived in Virginia. She was the epitome of what I thought a spiritual person should be in the way she did her everyday life and how she ran the company. She respected everyone as if we were her equals, valued what we had to say, and made sure we were taken care of if we were sick. She ensured that we had everything we needed.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
I would tell her she's absolutely capable. Knowledge is power. The more you learn, the more knowledge you have for your clients, and the more successful you'll be. I love encouraging them, so I'd be kind of their biggest cheerleader there.
