Her Interview

Ten minutes with Sheila

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to having a strong family of role models and my God given ability to inspire and draw out creativity in others. I use my gifts to help others.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve ever received, from my father, is to surround yourself with good people. Take every opportunity to learn something new. If you are the smartest person in the room, you are in the wrong room.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to find your niche, discover what brings you joy, and focus on how you can help others.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field right now is ensuring that my art reaches a wide audience and gets the visibility it deserves. I continue to seek opportunities to provide spaces for others to explore their own creativity. I desire to continue to speak on the importance of strong art programs for youth and adults in the community.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values most important to me in my work and personal life are faith in God, continual self-evaluation, and self-care, all while cherishing my family—38 years of marriage, two children, and seven grandchildren—alongside my passion for teaching, creating art, writing, and sharing my work through SJ Hall Artwork and Design and my newly launched book, Bold Strokes, Bold Statements, Bold Faith.
