She is a distinguished academic and researcher in data science, affective computing, and human-machine interfaces, currently serving as Assistant Professor and Graduate Coordinator for the MS in Data Science program at Wichita State University. In this role, she teaches and mentors graduate students, coordinates the data science program, and advances research in affective computing and speech-based emotion detection. She also serves as a reviewer for the National Science Foundation and for IEEE Transactions on Affective Computing. Her research career includes serving as an Audio R&D Scientist at EERS Global Technologies Inc. and as a Research Scholar at the Institut national de la recherche scientifique, where she completed her PhD in Telecommunications with a thesis focused on multi-lingual, environment-robust emotion detection from speech. She also completed an exchange program at McGill University, where she studied Applied Machine Learning. She is recognized as a dedicated, innovative, and rigorous researcher and educator who is deeply committed to advancing the fields of data science and affective computing through teaching, mentorship, and cutting-edge research.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to a combination of curiosity, perseverance, and a commitment to lifelong learning. Throughout my career, I have embraced challenges as opportunities to grow rather than obstacles to avoid. Whether transitioning from industry to academia, leading multidisciplinary research, or pursuing competitive research funding, I have remained focused on creating meaningful impact through innovation.

I also believe that success is built on consistency rather than isolated achievements. Small, disciplined actions every day continuously learning, mentoring students, collaborating with others, and striving for excellence—have helped me progress toward my long-term goals.

Most importantly, I am driven by a desire to use artificial intelligence to solve real-world problems in healthcare, public safety, and disaster resilience. Knowing that my research has the potential to improve people's lives motivates me to keep pushing forward. I am deeply grateful for the mentors, colleagues, students, and family members who have supported me throughout my journey, and I believe that success is most meaningful when it creates opportunities and inspires others to succeed as well.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

One of the best pieces of career advice I have ever received was: "Focus on creating impact, not just accumulating achievements." Publications, grants, awards, and titles are important, but they are ultimately outcomes of meaningful work rather than the goal itself. That advice has shaped the way I approach my career. I strive to pursue research that addresses real-world challenges whether it's improving healthcare through AI, developing more resilient disaster response systems, or creating trustworthy machine learning technologies. I also invest in mentoring students because empowering the next generation of researchers is just as important as advancing science.

Another lesson that has stayed with me is that careers are marathons, not sprints. Consistency, resilience, and a willingness to keep learning matter far more than trying to achieve everything at once. Every challenge presents an opportunity to grow, and maintaining curiosity and perseverance has been one of the most valuable drivers of my professional journey.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering artificial intelligence, data science, and engineering is to believe in your abilities, stay curious, and never let self-doubt define your potential. These fields are evolving rapidly, and there is tremendous opportunity for those who are willing to learn continuously, ask questions, and embrace challenges.

Don't be afraid to take on ambitious projects or step outside your comfort zone. Some of the greatest opportunities in my career came from saying "yes" to challenges that initially felt intimidating. Seek mentors who will support your growth, build a strong professional network, and remember that collaboration is one of the greatest strengths in research and innovation.

Most importantly, focus on making a meaningful impact rather than comparing yourself to others. Your unique perspective can lead to innovative solutions that others may not see. The world needs diverse voices to build AI systems that are fair, trustworthy, and beneficial to society. Stay persistent, celebrate your progress, and remember that your contributions can inspire the next generation of women in STEM.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

Artificial intelligence is advancing at an unprecedented pace, creating both exciting opportunities and important challenges. One of the greatest opportunities is the ability to apply AI to solve real-world problems in areas such as healthcare, disaster response, public safety, education, and scientific discovery. Advances in generative AI and foundation models are transforming how we conduct research, analyze data, and support decision-making.

At the same time, one of the biggest challenges is ensuring that AI systems are trustworthy, transparent, fair, and secure. As AI becomes more integrated into everyday life, we must address issues such as bias, privacy, explainability, and robustness to ensure these technologies are used responsibly. Another challenge is bridging the gap between cutting-edge research and practical deployment, so AI solutions can be adopted effectively in real-world settings.

I believe the future of AI lies not only in building more powerful models but also in developing human-centered AI that is ethical, reliable, and designed to improve people's lives. This is the direction that motivates my research and the impact I hope to make through my work.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that guide both my work and personal life are integrity, curiosity, compassion, perseverance, and service. I believe that success should never come at the expense of honesty or ethical responsibility. Whether conducting research, mentoring students, or collaborating with colleagues, I strive to act with transparency, respect, and accountability.

Curiosity drives me to continuously learn and explore new ideas, while perseverance helps me navigate challenges and setbacks with resilience. I also value compassion and empathy, recognizing that the most meaningful innovations are those that improve people's lives and create opportunities for others.

Above all, I believe in making a positive impact. As an educator and researcher, I hope not only to advance artificial intelligence but also to mentor the next generation of scientists and engineers, contribute to my community, and develop technologies that are ethical, trustworthy, and beneficial to society. These values keep me grounded and remind me that true success is measured not only by personal achievements but by the difference we make in the lives of others.
