Based in Saluda, South Carolina, Special Leigh brings nearly a decade of experience in emergency management, federal grant consulting, and disaster response operations. Her expertise centers on FEMA Public Assistance programs, grants management, reimbursement processes, compliance review, and developing effective recovery strategies that help communities rebuild after major disasters.

Special Leigh’s professional journey has been shaped by extensive work across government, nonprofit, and private-sector organizations. She has supported disaster recovery efforts through roles with the South Carolina Emergency Management Division, consulting firms, and disaster relief organizations, where she managed complex recovery projects, coordinated with municipalities, and assisted clients with federal funding requirements. 01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to being self-motivated, having a dynamic personality, and maintaining a strong desire to learn and grow. I am naturally curious and believe in the value of asking questions, seeking new perspectives, and continuously expanding my knowledge through ongoing education and personal development.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I have ever received is that the more you know, the more you grow. Continuous learning and personal development open doors to new opportunities and help you evolve professionally. I have also learned that it is okay to pivot, change direction, and explore new paths in order to discover where your true passion lies. Growth often comes from being open to change and embracing new possibilities.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering my industry is to remain determined and never give up on their goals. Success comes from perseverance, resilience, and the willingness to keep moving forward despite challenges. Follow your dreams, stay focused on your vision, and do not allow obstacles to stand in the way of your growth and success.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest opportunities in my field right now are centered around continued research, innovation, and applying my areas of expertise to support ongoing scientific progress. I believe there is also a significant opportunity to help small businesses grow and thrive by leveraging knowledge, insights, and strategic approaches that enable them to adapt, expand, and succeed in a rapidly changing environment.

The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are being goal-driven, detail-oriented, and committed to leading by example. I believe in the importance of being open, honest, and authentic in my interactions with others while inspiring and empowering women to pursue their goals. I value progress over perfection, embracing opportunities as they arise, and having the determination to make the most of every experience and challenge.
