Her Story

About Stenia

I've been with the federal government for 25 years, with the next month marking that milestone, and I've been in a leadership role for 16 years. I started my career with the Social Security Administration as a claims representative through a cooperative education program while completing my bachelor's degree at Florida Atlantic University in fall 2001. I pursued my master's in public administration in 2008 and then embarked on my doctoral journey in 2009, though I had to pause and restart in 2012 due to my son's medical issues, finally completing my doctorate from Walden University in May 2017. As a hearing office director, I oversee the daily operations of the hearing office, working alongside supervisors who oversee employees and collaborating with administrative law judges. My duties as a public servant are to ensure that decisions are being made in a timely manner, that employees are being treated fairly and equitably, and to pass on information to employees in a timely manner while conducting monthly staff meetings. We work for the people at the hearing level, serving those applying for various types of benefits whether retirement or disability, getting their files ready for hearings so judges can make decisions on their cases. My career has evolved over the years, and while I didn't expect to still be here 25 years later, I've come to love what I do and have the passion for it.

Ten minutes with Stenia

01What do you attribute your success to?

I definitely attribute my success to my upbringing and my childhood. I'm Jamaican, and my Caribbean nationality shaped who I am. My parents were incredible role models - my mom was a stay-at-home mom but she worked very hard, and my dad is also a hard worker who's in his 70s and still working because he doesn't know how to retire properly. Beyond my upbringing and family, I have an amazing support system that includes my spouse who has taken care of our special needs son so I can evolve and have mobility in my career. It's really been my family, my support system, and the foundation my parents gave me that has allowed me to achieve what I have.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would say be persevere and resilient. Don't give up, because not everybody's path is linear. My path definitely was not linear. Just stay the course, always analyze the pros and cons, and look at the longevity of your career. When I started 25 years ago, I didn't expect to still be here, but as my career evolved, I came to love what I do. Make sure you love what you do. Make sure you enjoy what you do in life. The money will always be there, but ensure that you love what you do and that you have the passion for what you do.
