Her Story
About Summer
I've been in the gaming industry for over 10 years, and I currently serve as Senior Accountant at Tan Entertainment, where I started last fall. Before joining Tan Entertainment, I spent the rest of my career working in the casino gaming sector. My main areas of expertise are revenue audit and general ledger accounting. I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Gardner-Webb University in 2014, and I'm proud to say I completed it in just 3 years by working really hard, paying fines, and taking extra classes to get my degree early. I came from a really humble background, and while my parents were blessed to help fund my education, we were very much on a budget, so that hardworking spirit was always important growing up and has transferred itself over into the workplace. I'm an active member of Global Gaming Women (GGW), a professional organization in the casino gaming industry. Outside of work, I'm a boy mom, so anything with my son keeps me busy. I'm really active outdoors and enjoy kayaking and traveling. I believe strongly in servant leadership, both at work and in the home. I'm not afraid to get in and work in the trenches with my team, and I think when your team or your peers or your family see that, it helps develop a sense of respect and trust.
Her Interview
Ten minutes with Summer
01What do you attribute your success to?
I would have to say my parents. They raised me to be very hardworking, and I actually got my degree in 3 years - I had to work really, really hard and take extra classes just to get my degree early. I came from a really humble background, and my parents, you know, I'm blessed that they were able to help fund my education, but we were very much on a budget. So that hardworking spirit was always important growing up, and I think that transferred itself over into the workplace.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
I think the best advice I've ever been given is to be stubborn. Especially in the gaming industry, you know, always stand up for your team, always stand up for yourself, and to do that, sometimes you have to be stubborn.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Probably keep your head up and, you know, look for mentors within your industry that can help guide you and just give you advice when you need it.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
I think probably just being able to keep up with changes, and that, you know, that's an opportunity and a challenge, I think, in itself. You just have to kind of be able to adapt to changes and be open to change. You know, in this industry, things are always changing.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
I really, really think that servant leadership is very important. I think at work and in the home as well, I'm not afraid to, you know, kind of get in and work in the trenches, so to speak, with my team. I'm not afraid of hard work, and I think when your team or your peers or your family see that, it just kind of helps develop a sense of respect and trust. So I think that's probably my number one value - you know, don't be afraid to work, don't be afraid to kind of get in and get dirty and do the job with your team.
