About Susan
Susan Garrett, MPH, is a public health leader, project management professional, and independent consultant with more than 22 years of experience advancing community health and strengthening nonprofit organizations. As the founder and principal of Raíces Impact Strategies, she partners with mission-driven organizations to design, implement, and evaluate programs that create meaningful, measurable impact. Known for her strategic mindset and action-oriented leadership, Susan excels at guiding complex initiatives from concept to completion while fostering collaboration, accountability, and sustainable growth.
Throughout her career, Susan has built expertise in program development, project management, community-led research, and organizational strategy. She brings a bilingual and bicultural perspective to her work, helping organizations effectively engage Latino communities throughout the Kansas City region. Before launching her consulting practice full time, she served as a faculty member in the Bachelor of Health Sciences program at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, where she taught courses in public health, diversity, global health, and Spanish for healthcare professionals. She also held leadership roles overseeing national public health initiatives, operational strategy, and community-based health programs, further strengthening her ability to deliver results across diverse sectors.
Susan earned her Master of Public Health from the University of Kansas Medical Center and has established herself as a trusted advisor to nonprofit and public health organizations. In addition to her consulting work, she serves on the boards of Flourish and Samuel U. Rogers Health Center, reflecting her longstanding commitment to health equity, community engagement, and service. Guided by a philosophy of putting the mission first and leaving ego aside, Susan continues to build partnerships that empower communities, improve health outcomes, and create lasting social impact.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to building strong relationships, maintaining a service-driven mindset, fostering meaningful community connections, and embracing collaboration. By focusing on serving others and working together toward shared goals, I've been able to create lasting impact and achieve meaningful results.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
The best career advice I've ever received is to be myself, stay authentic, and remember that it's okay to simply be who I am. Authenticity builds trust, strengthens relationships, and allows me to make the greatest impact.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Don't let imposter syndrome hold you back. Believe in yourself, build strong relationships, and don't be afraid to go after the opportunities you want. Confidence grows through experience, so take the leap and trust in your abilities.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that matter most to me, both professionally and personally, are family, friendship, and a strong commitment to getting things done. I believe in showing up for the people who matter, building meaningful relationships, and following through on my commitments with integrity and determination.
