About Susan

Susan Thomas is a seasoned professional in staging and design with more than two decades of experience across various aspects of home improvement and interior design. After working in cabinetry design, paint selection, kitchen and closet systems, and selling window fashions at Home Depot, she opened her own business, Nestings Home Staging and Interiors, later in life following the pandemic. Based in Las Vegas, Susan assists private clients with furniture and tile selection for new homes and offers staging services that help realtors sell properties more quickly by creating inviting environments. A high school graduate who attended two years of college, she draws on mentorship from a closet company owner and prioritizes listening to clients, being honest, and ensuring their personalities shine through in the designs. Susan is semi-retired and selectively takes on about five or six interior design projects at a time, focusing on quality and compatibility with each client.

01What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I had a dear friend that owned a closet company here in town. She was my mentor for 15 years in the closet business. She just told me, just listen. Listen to the clients. Let them talk about themselves, and really get to know the clients that you're working with.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Find your brakes. Find your bricks because they tend to be overexcited and enthusiastic. The first thing you need to do is not just go in and throw up all over the clients and tell them everything you know. Learn to listen. Listen to their needs. And then you can give them spoonfuls of what you know and what your knowledge is.

03What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I think the thing that I've learned most of all is just to be really honest with people. I want to make sure that their needs are being taken care of, and that their personalities are reflected in what we do. I try to guide them if I don't think it's going to work. When I go to an appointment, it's usually complimentary the first time around because the first thing I want to do is make sure that we play well together and our personalities mesh.
