Her Story
About Tara
After 12 years as a medical biller and coder, I found myself at a crossroads when my company shifted direction and I thought I was going to retire there. My son had just graduated, and I was on a self-healing journey, questioning who I was outside of being a mom and a worker. I wanted to do something meaningful, build something impactful, and make my mark in the world.
I ended up writing a memoir that took me through different journeys of my past, bringing a lot of self-reflection and healing along with self-awareness. My book is written in a unique way, it's a memoir but with hidden guides and blueprints, so if you pay attention to the words instead of just the experiences, you'll start self-reflecting too. This led me to create Unchosen Choices, a platform where people can voice themselves and stand in their truth, because that was something I was never allowed to do growing up, always seen, but never heard.
I've always been a mentor and guidance coach, the person everyone would say 'go talk to Tara, she'll help you get there', I motivate and encourage others without telling people what to do. Now I'm taking that broader, working with my community, schools, and youth programs, speaking to bigger crowds, and developing a course to help people help themselves. My main area of expertise is self-love and self-awareness, particularly helping people who are dealing with trauma or pain they've tucked away in what I call a Pandora box. I draw people who are unaware that they have the self-awareness to promote the movement they need.
My typical day involves reaching out on social media with motivational and inspirational quotes, having conversations with people who reach out to me, booking coaching sessions, and preparing for my launch at the end of the month to open it out to everybody.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute all of my success to God. I am a woman of faith, and without Him, I would not be where I am today. There was a time when I believed I was in complete control of my life and that everything would unfold according to my plans. Over time, I learned that some of life's greatest blessings come when we surrender our own expectations and trust a greater purpose. As the saying goes, "If you want to make God smile, tell Him your plans."
Looking back, I can see that many of the opportunities, lessons, and paths that shaped my journey were not the ones I would have chosen for myself, but they were exactly what I needed to be the person that I am becoming. I also attribute my success to my family. They are my greatest source of encouragement, my biggest supporters, and my motivation to keep moving forward even during challenging times. Their belief in me has given me strength when I doubted myself and reminded me why perseverance matters. Beyond faith and family, I believe success is built through resilience and the willingness to keep growing.
Every challenge, setback, and unexpected turn has taught me valuable lessons that have helped shape both the person I am and the work I do today. Success, to me, is not measured solely by accomplishments, but by the lives we impact, the relationships we build, and the purpose we pursue along the way.
02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?
Be helpful, but don't allow your help to overshadow what you need to do. That is one of the most valuable pieces of career advice I've ever received. As someone who genuinely cares about people, I've learned that it's easy to become so invested in supporting others that you unintentionally place your own goals, growth, and purpose on hold.
Helping others is meaningful work, but it should not come at the expense of your own journey. You cannot pour endlessly into everyone else while neglecting the responsibilities, dreams, and opportunities that have been placed before you. Over time, I've learned that there is a difference between serving others and sacrificing yourself.
The most effective leaders, mentors, and coaches understand the importance of creating balance, continuing to show up for others while also honoring their own vision, boundaries, and personal development. When we give ourselves permission to grow alongside those we serve, we create a stronger foundation not only for our own success, but for the impact we hope to make in the lives of others.
03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
Success is not about being chosen by others. It's about choosing yourself. Too often, young women wait for permission, validation, or the perfect moment before pursuing their goals. What I've learned is that confidence doesn't come before action, it grows because of it. There will be times when people don't understand your vision, and moments when the path forward feels uncertain. Keep moving anyway.
Don't underestimate the value of your voice, your experiences, or your story. The very things you've overcome may become the inspiration, guidance, or encouragement someone else needs. Rather than comparing yourself to others, focus on becoming the best version of yourself and trust that your journey is unfolding in its own time. Be willing to take the first step before you feel fully ready.
Growth happens when we embrace the unknown, trust ourselves, and choose to move forward despite our fears. Be brave enough to become who you are before the world gives you permission to be her.
04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in my field today is that we live in a world where people are more connected than ever, yet many feel deeply disconnected from themselves. Social media has made it easy to compare our lives to others, but much harder to understand who we truly are beneath the expectations, labels, and roles we carry. At the same time, I believe this challenge presents one of the greatest opportunities.
More people are seeking authenticity, self-awareness, and meaningful transformation rather than quick fixes. They want to understand their patterns, gain clarity, and create lasting change in their lives. Through my work as a memoirist, speaker, guidance coach, and youth mentor, I have witnessed firsthand how powerful honest conversations can be. When people feel seen, heard, and understood, they often begin to recognize possibilities they could not see before.
The opportunity for professionals in this field is not simply to provide answers, but to create spaces where individuals can reconnect with themselves, challenge limiting beliefs, and discover the strength that already exists within them. I believe the future of personal development lies in helping people move beyond survival and into intentional living, where they are no longer defined by what happened to them, but empowered by what they choose to do next.
05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that guide both my work and personal life are authenticity, compassion, integrity, and self-awareness. I believe that genuine connection begins when people feel seen, heard, and understood. Whether I am speaking, mentoring, coaching, or simply having a conversation, I strive to create a space where people feel safe enough to be themselves without judgment. Integrity is equally important to me. I believe in being honest about both the victories and the challenges that shape our lives. It is through transparency that trust is built, and trust is the foundation of meaningful relationships.
I also value personal growth and self-awareness. Many of the choices we make are influenced by experiences, beliefs, and patterns we may not even realize we carry. My work is centered on helping people recognize those patterns, gain clarity, and approach life with greater intention.
Above all, I value compassion, for ourselves and for others. We never truly know what someone is carrying, and I believe a little understanding, kindness, and grace can create a lasting impact. Those values are not only at the heart of my work, but at the heart of who I am.
