The Choices You Don't Know You're Making

Most people believe their lives are shaped by the choices they consciously make: the career they pursue, the relationships they enter, the opportunities they accept, and the goals they set.

But what if some of the most significant choices in our lives are the ones we don’t realize we’re making?

For years, I believed life was simply happening to me. Like many people, I could identify the obvious decisions I had made, but I rarely stopped to examine the beliefs, fears, habits, and patterns operating beneath the surface. It wasn’t until I began my own journey of self-reflection that I realized many of my decisions were being influenced by experiences I had never fully processed. That realization became the foundation for my book, Unchosen: The Choices You Don’t Know You Are Making. Through sharing my story, I wanted to encourage others to look beyond life’s visible decisions and explore the hidden patterns, beliefs, and experiences that quietly influence the direction of their lives.

Without realizing it, we often make choices from places of fear instead of faith, survival instead of healing, and familiarity instead of growth.

We stay in situations that no longer serve us because they feel comfortable. We silence our voices because we fear judgment. We postpone our dreams because we are waiting for certainty that may never come.

These are what I call “unchosen choices”: the decisions we make unconsciously that ultimately shape the direction of our lives.

The Challenge of Self-Awareness

The challenge is that we cannot change what we do not recognize.

Self-awareness is one of the most powerful tools available to us because it allows us to pause and ask difficult but necessary questions:

  • Why do I respond this way?
  • What belief is driving this decision?
  • Am I acting from my authentic self, or from a wound that has not yet healed?

As a speaker, guidance coach, youth mentor, and author, I have witnessed how transformative these questions can be. When people begin to understand themselves more deeply, they often discover that the limitations they believed defined them were never permanent. They were simply patterns waiting to be acknowledged.

True growth begins when we become curious about ourselves rather than critical of ourselves. The goal is not perfection. The goal is awareness. Awareness creates choice. Choice creates change. And change creates the possibility of a different future.

The message at the heart of Unchosen is simple: when we become aware of the patterns shaping our decisions, we gain the power to choose differently. We stop living on autopilot and begin living with intention.

My own journey has taught me that our past experiences do not have to dictate our future outcomes. While we cannot always choose what happens to us, we can choose how we respond, what we learn, and who we become because of it.

Every day presents an opportunity to examine the choices operating beneath the surface and decide whether they still align with the life we want to create.

The most powerful choice we can make is not simply choosing a different path. It is choosing to become aware of the path we are already on.

Because sometimes, the choices that change our lives the most are the ones we never realized we were making.

And that awareness is where transformation begins.
