About Tenisha
Tenisha L. Tevis, Ph.D., serves as Associate Professor of Education and Director of Difference, Power & Oppression at Oregon State University, where she has been a tenured faculty member for the past decade. She earned her Ph.D. in Educational Theory and Policy Studies from The Pennsylvania State University, following her Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Sociology from California State University, Sacramento. She began her academic journey at Sacramento City College, an experience that shaped her understanding of the challenges and opportunities within higher education, particularly for students navigating pathways to success.
Dr. Tevis’ scholarly work focuses on students’ transitions from K–12 education to college and other post-secondary opportunities, the intersection of identity and leadership, and the impact of educational policies on student outcomes. Her research explores how institutions can better support student achievement, address systemic barriers, and develop strategies that create more equitable and inclusive learning environments. Through her teaching, research, and service, she is committed to improving educational systems and empowering students to reach their full potential.
Beyond her academic leadership, Dr. Tevis is deeply committed to mentorship and community engagement. She extends her passion for guiding and inspiring others through coaching middle school and high school girls’ basketball teams, where she encourages confidence, teamwork, and personal growth. She attributes her success to her passion for education and her dedication to creating positive change from within, drawing from her own experiences as a first-generation student who navigated higher education with limited cultural capital. Her work reflects a lifelong commitment to advocacy, leadership, and expanding opportunities for future generations.

01What do you attribute your success to?
I attribute my success to my passion for education and my commitment to helping students achieve their goals. Supporting and empowering students through their academic journeys has been a driving force in my career, motivating me to create meaningful opportunities and make a positive impact in their lives. I believe that education has the power to transform individuals and communities, and I am dedicated to fostering an environment where students feel encouraged, supported, and inspired to succeed.
02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?
My advice to young women entering the education industry is to remain persistent, believe in themselves, and never give up on their goals. Building a successful career takes dedication, resilience, and continuous growth. I encourage women to seek out mentors who can provide guidance, support, and valuable perspectives, while also building strong professional networks that open doors to new opportunities. Developing meaningful relationships and learning from others can be instrumental in achieving long-term success.
03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?
One of the biggest challenges in education today is the lack of sufficient state funding, along with the continued rise in the cost of education. These challenges can create barriers for students seeking access to quality educational opportunities and place additional pressure on institutions to maintain and expand their programs. At the same time, there is a significant opportunity to advocate for innovative solutions, increase accessibility, and continue developing programs that support student success while addressing the evolving needs of learners and communities.
04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?
The values that are most important to me in both my work and personal life are mentorship, encouragement, and helping others reach their full potential. I find great fulfillment in supporting and guiding others, whether through my professional role in education or by coaching a girls’ basketball team. Building confidence, fostering teamwork, and creating opportunities for growth are passions that influence how I approach both my career and my relationships with others. I believe in leading by example and making a positive impact by empowering those around me.
