About Therese

Therese McCoy is an Employee Benefits Consultant and producer at Hotchkiss Insurance, based in Houston, Texas. With more than 14 years of experience in the employee benefits and healthcare consulting industry, she specializes in helping mid-market and large employers design smarter, more cost-effective health benefit strategies. Her expertise focuses on self-funded plans, captive insurance arrangements, alternative funding solutions, stop-loss optimization, and pharmacy benefit management (PBM) strategies. Through her work, she helps CFOs and HR leaders better understand the complexities of healthcare costs and make informed decisions that align with their organization’s goals.

Throughout her career, McCoy has held leadership roles in employee benefits consulting, strategic employer engagement, and enterprise sales. Prior to joining Hotchkiss Insurance, she served as Regional Vice President at ParetoHealth, where she partnered with brokers and employers on self-funding and captive strategies, and as Director of Strategic Employer Engagement at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, leading employer-focused healthcare solutions. She also built a successful benefits consulting practice at USI Insurance Services and began her career in enterprise sales at TriNet, where she helped organizations implement HR, payroll, and benefits solutions. Her ability to combine technical industry knowledge with clear communication allows her to translate complex benefits concepts into actionable strategies for business leaders.

McCoy holds a Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Sciences from Texas A&M University and a Master of Science in Nutrition Sciences from Texas Woman's University. She is a Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS) and Certified Self-Funding Specialist (CSFS), demonstrating her commitment to advanced expertise in employee benefits and healthcare funding models. Beyond her consulting work, she serves as a board member and Vice President of the Houston Chapter of the International Society of Certified Employee Benefit Specialists, where she contributes to advancing education and innovation within the benefits industry. Through her platform, Health Plan Decoded, McCoy also shares industry insights to help employers better understand healthcare economics, transparency, and the future of employee benefits.

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to being self-motivated, goal-driven, and detail-oriented. I am committed to continuous learning, professional growth, and making a positive impact every day.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I’ve received is that the more you know, the more you grow. I’ve learned to keep pushing forward, embrace challenges, and view obstacles as opportunities for growth.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

My advice to young women entering this industry is to embrace change and know that it’s okay to pivot when needed. Stay true to yourself, prioritize your growth, stand tall and be proud of your work. Continue striving to make a meaningful difference.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenges and opportunities in my field involve helping organizations navigate the evolving needs of HR, benefits, and payroll solutions. In enterprise sales, building trusted relationships with CEOs, CFOs, and executive teams across diverse industries requires understanding their unique challenges and delivering solutions that create real business value.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

The values that are most important to me are leading by example, treating others with kindness and respect, and listening with empathy and understanding. I believe in staying true to myself, valuing each person’s unique perspective, and creating positive connections both personally and professionally.
