When a role changes, credential requirements often change with it. A position that once required no data knowledge may now demand it. Implied skills also become standard over time. Twenty years ago, job postings explicitly listed typing and Excel proficiency. Today, those skills are assumed.

As requirements grow, so does the cost of the position. Management faces a critical decision: evaluate whether the role truly needs specialized skills—or if automation is a better solution.

One way to manage this evolution is through mapping and documentation. Clear process maps reduce training time and ensure continuity. New hires shouldn’t just learn where to click—they should understand why. The most valuable skills they bring should be creative thinking and problem-solving; everything else can be documented.

Scope creep isn’t limited to job descriptions—it happens to people too. Over time, personal and professional experiences shape new values. When those values no longer align with the role or the organization, burnout follows.

The truth is, work/life balance doesn’t exist—work/life integration does. Your job impacts your personal life, and your personal life impacts your job.

I learned this firsthand. I started my career at 16 with no kids. At 23, I got married—my job affected my spouse. At 25, I had my first child, and my priorities shifted dramatically. I wanted flexibility, not fluorescent lights and endless clicking.

Mapping Your Career Path

So I mapped out two paths:

1. The one I was on.
2. The one I wanted—aligned with my new values.

I listed what mattered most:

• Work from home one day a week.
• Eight-hour days, no more.
• Flexibility for sick kids or late starts for appointments.

It took ten years to fully achieve those features, but along the way, I learned new skills, discovered my passion, and built a career that aligned with my life.

Two years into my marriage, I had my first son—and that’s when I learned just how tough the working world was for moms. Back then, there were no laptops, no remote work, no nursing rooms, no on-site daycare, and definitely no parental leave. Daycare costs? Astronomical. So high that I couldn’t afford both childcare and my apartment. After a C-section, I took my six weeks of medical leave and went straight back to work. If I’d had a natural birth, I would’ve only gotten three weeks. Three weeks!

When I returned, I found three other women who felt the same way. Over lunch, we asked ourselves: What if we could make this better? That’s how Parents in Networking Group (PiNG) was born. Four moms, one table, and a big dream. Our first win was small but powerful—a nursing room. We converted the women’s locker room into a private space. It wasn’t fancy, but it was progress.

From there, we kept going. Over the next decade, PiNG grew from four women to over 100 employees. We launched an on-site preschool at reduced costs, started monthly fireside chats for new moms, and welcomed dads into the conversation. We were building a community—and a movement.

Four years later, after earning my bachelor’s degree, I had my daughter. That’s when PiNG decided to tackle the biggest challenge yet: paid parental leave. We didn’t just want time off—we wanted adoption assistance and infertility support too. Our first proposal? Rejected. Flat out. Timing was tough; the company had just rolled out major benefit upgrades. Asking for more felt like “giving a mouse a cookie.”

But here’s the thing: we didn’t give up. We regrouped, broke our proposal into smaller steps, and started with three weeks of paid leave. That was our foot in the door. Over time, three weeks became six. Post-COVID, it became eight. Watching those benefits grow filled me with pride.

What started as four moms around a lunch table became a movement that changed our workplace—and the lives of countless families. We didn’t accept the status quo. We challenged it. And that’s the message I want every woman to hear: you have the power to create change. Start small. Start today. Start with the people around you.

When COVID hit, life changed for all of us. For me, it began with a simple routine—every Tuesday, packing up the kids and heading to the local school for a week’s worth of food and supplies. Those mornings felt oddly peaceful. After years of working toward a remote career, the pandemic became the final piece of the puzzle.

But life had other plans. A year in, I suffered a miscarriage—our fourth child—while my husband was out of reach. I made it to the hospital just in time for an emergency procedure. By Monday, I was back at work, telling no one. That experience taught me something powerful: strength isn’t loud—it’s the quiet decision to keep moving forward.

Then came another test. Our oldest returned to public school post-COVID, and four months later, CPS knocked on our door with false abuse allegations. All four children were removed for 30 days—including my nine-month-old rainbow baby. I remember sitting in their empty rooms, wondering what I had done wrong.

At the same time, corporations were calling employees back to the office. In a moment of vulnerability, I broke down in front of management and shared everything—not knowing who else to turn to.

That conversation changed everything. Support can come from the most unexpected places. My employer didn’t hesitate—they granted me full remote flexibility until matters were resolved. It reminded me that workplaces aren’t just structures; they can be pillars of support when we need them most.

I was empowered to fight back—with honesty, advocacy, and persistence. I appealed to homeschool my kids, armed with documentation and professional support. I won. That moment changed everything.

For the first time, I no longer felt like an imposter. I was their mother, and I was a good one. I was making decisions for my children’s future.

Today, our family thrives. We’ve built new traditions—running half-marathons together, joining the Healthy Kids Running Series, and even stepping up as coordinators to keep the program alive. At work, I lead a special-needs support group to help parents leverage benefits effectively.

What I’ve learned:

✅ Resilience isn’t about standing tall—it’s about adapting, advocating, and never losing sight of what matters most.
