Her Story

About Veronica

I've spent 15 years in the retail industry, and my journey has been one of steady growth and dedication to developing others. I started at the very beginning as a cashier, but I was only in that role for a couple of months before transitioning to store manager. I spent 11 years as a store manager, learning the business inside and out. Almost 2 months ago, I stepped into my current role as district manager, where I now manage 18 stores and lead 18 people in my community. My main area of expertise is teaching and training and growing people. My key responsibilities are making sure that I set my team up for success, teaching and training them, setting the standards, making sure they're on process, and ensuring they hit their metrics. I've always had a servant leadership type about myself, with a desire to help people and help grow people. What I'm most proud of throughout my career is the number of people I've been able to promote. I value trust and loyalty, and I believe in keeping God first and striving for excellence. My goal within the next 2 years is to become a regional director within the company I'm with.

Ten minutes with Veronica

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to just having good people in my life. People that invested in me and invested the time to teach and train me. And being brought up in a home where I was taught not to give up and to strive for what you want. Having mentors and family who believed in me and took the time to develop my skills has been instrumental in getting me to where I am today.

02What’s the best career advice you’ve ever received?

The best career advice I've ever received is to always remember, you never know who's watching. Even when you think that no one's watching you, they are. You can be monitored without someone seeing your physical attributes. They can see it through metrics and different things like that. So always remember, you never know who's watching. This has stuck with me throughout my career and reminds me to always bring my best, because someone is always paying attention to how I perform and conduct myself.

03What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would tell young women entering the retail industry to keep God first and just strive for excellence. Don't be afraid to raise your hand to ask questions. There's no such thing as a dumb question. Just keep pushing. And don't obtain all the knowledge for yourself, share the knowledge. It's important to help others grow and not keep what you've learned to yourself.

04What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest opportunity that I face is just being able to share with viable people. Finding and developing the right people who can grow and succeed is what I see as the main opportunity in my field right now.

05What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

I value trust and loyalty. These are the most important values to me in both my work and personal life. Having people I can trust and who are loyal, and being that person for others, is fundamental to how I operate and lead.
