About Wen

Wen Newman is a fund manager based in Argyle, Texas, serving as the head of investment strategy at Wen Futures Capital Management. She is primarily focused on global macro and commodities-driven investing, with an emphasis on interpreting macroeconomic, geopolitical, and liquidity shifts across energy, metals, agriculture, currencies, and equity indices. Her work centers on identifying large-scale market trends and translating them into investment strategies across futures and derivatives markets.

Wen Newman’s career spans roughly three decades in trading and financial markets, beginning with her early interest in foreign exchange while living in China. After relocating to North America, she developed her professional foundation further in Canada before moving to the United States, where she expanded into advisory and trading roles. She previously worked as a financial advisor at Citigroup, helping clients navigate investment and insurance decisions, before transitioning into full-time trading in the mid-2000s and eventually establishing her own investment firm.

Her investment philosophy is rooted in global macro analysis, with a strong focus on how macroeconomic cycles, interest rates, inflation dynamics, and geopolitical developments influence asset prices across markets. She emphasizes commodities and futures trading, particularly during periods of inflationary pressure and economic transition, and views markets as interconnected systems shaped by capital flows rather than isolated assets. In her commentary, she often highlights themes such as energy supply constraints, AI-driven market concentration, and liquidity shifts, reflecting a strategy that prioritizes structural trends and risk-aware positioning over short-term speculation.

Ten minutes with Wen

01What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

If I could go back to my younger self 20 years ago, I would choose a different path without hesitation and avoid wasting time on directions that do not contribute to long-term growth and purpose; I’ve learned that this field not only helps shape your mindset, values, and understanding of who you are and how you want to live, but also equips you with the practical tools needed to build long-term financial stability and create sustainable wealth over time.

02What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The biggest challenge in my field is not the market itself, but me—my psychology, mindset, and attitude. It all comes down to how well I can manage myself, maintain discipline, and consistently cultivate a positive outlook. The real work is learning how to control my emotions and strengthen my mentality. On the opportunity side, shifts such as rising interest rates often cause less attention in commodity markets, which can create significant openings; in my view, long-term wealth is built by paying attention to these broader trends that others tend to overlook.
