The Professional Rival Who Made Her Better
Competition became motivation rather than resentment.
Competition became motivation rather than resentment.
I've had experiences where I came into an organization and someone immediately seemed to take issue with me and the position I was stepping into. Initially, it bothered me, but I learned not to make someone else's behavior about me. People are often dealing with things we know nothing about and I realized there was no reason to engage in someone else's unhappiness. I remained professional and kind, even when the energy I received wasn't the same. Sometimes the strongest response is no response. I chose to stay focused on my purpose, stay true to myself and let my work speak for itself.
In 2016, I met a lady who was 2 years older than I was, and at that time was pursuing her Master's degree in one of the top universities in Nigeria. At that time, I only had a Higher National Diploma (HND) which is supposed to be equivalent to BSc, but it's not in reality. When meeting this lady challenged me, I knew I desired advanced degrees, but as a young single mother, I didn't know how possible it would be to achieve that. In 2017, went back to university for my BSc, got my MSc, and now I'm about to be hooded as a PhD. Intellect has always been something that catches my attention and I am glad I met that lady, by the way she is also a PhD now too.
