Bet on Yourself: Grit, Leadership, and Opening Doors for Others
Back to Podcasts

Chef, restaurateur, entrepreneur, and television personality Chef Tiffany Derry has built a career by trusting her instincts, embracing reinvention, and creating opportunities for others. A James Beard Award finalist and MasterChef judge, she is the founder of Tiffany Derry Concepts and co-founder of T2D Concepts, the hospitality group behind Roots Southern Table, Roots Chicken Shak, and Radici Wood-Fired Grill.

Tiffany's journey began with rejection. At 15, she was turned away from the cooking job she wanted and found another way into the restaurant industry instead. Years later, after experiencing the sudden closure of a restaurant and realizing how little control she had over what happened to the team depending on her, she became determined to build something of her own.

Along the way, Tiffany also learned to stop shaping herself around other people's expectations. During Top Chef, she reached a turning point: “It's time to bet on me.” That decision to trust her own voice has influenced the way she cooks, leads, builds businesses, and mentors the next generation.

In this conversation, Tiffany shares how she's challenging traditional ideas about leadership in hospitality, from implementing a four-day workweek to creating pathways toward restaurant ownership and generational wealth. She also opens up about mentorship, wellness, taking risks, asking for what you want, and why meaningful success includes opening doors for others.

In this conversation, Tiffany shares:

  • How early rejection shaped her approach to opportunity
  • Why grit can matter more than experience
  • The moment she decided to bet on herself
  • Why authenticity has become essential to her leadership
  • How she challenges the hospitality industry's culture of overwork
  • Why hospitality begins with your own team
  • How mentorship and accountability work together
  • Why creating pathways toward ownership matters
  • What moving from television competitor to judge taught her about taking risks
  • Why preparation has to accompany ambition
  • How women can become more confident asking for what they want
  • Why you only need one yes

Tiffany's journey is a reminder that betting on yourself isn't only about creating your own success. It's about using what you build to create opportunities for the people coming behind you.

Tiffany Derry is a Beaumont, Texas native who built her career on Southern cooking and hasn't stopped expanding it since. She's the founder of Tiffany Derry Concepts and co-founder, alongside Tom Foley, of T2D Concepts, the Texas-based hospitality group behind Roots Southern Table, Roots Chicken Shak, and Radici Wood-Fired Grill, along with her 'Shef Tiffany spice and apparel line. She also created Shef Food + Wine, a festival bringing national and international chefs, distillers, and winemakers together to spotlight the Texas culinary scene.

Derry's path started early and wasn't easy. At 15, she was turned down for her first cooking job at an IHOP because of her race and gender, and was hired as a server instead. She trained at the Art Institute of Houston, worked her way through Texas kitchens including Pesce and Grotto Cucina Napolitano, and opened her first restaurant, Private|Social, in Dallas in 2010 to a four-star review from The Dallas Morning News. Roots Southern Table, which she opened in 2021, landed on The New York Times' Restaurant List that same year and earned a James Beard Award nomination for Best New Restaurant. Derry herself has been a James Beard Award finalist for Best Chef: Texas.

On television, Derry is a fan-favorite finalist from Top Chef Season 7 and Top Chef: All-Stars, and now judges on MasterChef alongside Gordon Ramsay and Joe Bastianich. She's hosted two seasons of Worst Cooks in America and appeared on Tournament of Champions, Bobby's Triple Threat, Chopped, and Beat Bobby Flay, among others. She's cooked for President Obama at the White House and served as a spokesperson for the James Beard Foundation's sustainability initiatives.

Outside the kitchen, Derry is a member of Les Dames d'Escoffier and a vocal advocate for gender and racial equity in hospitality. Through T2D Concepts, she and Tom Foley built a franchise model designed to make restaurant ownership more accessible to minority owners, aiming to close the industry's wealth gap one concept at a time. She lives in Dallas.
