Raise Your Hand, Raise Your Voice: Leadership, Equality, and Owning Your Future
What happens when you stop allowing circumstances, expectations, and other people's timelines to define what your life should look like?
In this episode of the Influential Women Podcast, host Jodie O'Brien sits down with Angélica Fuentes, Mexican-American businesswoman, impact investor, founder and CEO of Nowful, and longtime advocate for gender equality and women's empowerment.
Angélica's understanding of leadership began long before she entered a boardroom. At 11 years old, while working at her family's gas station, she noticed that the men received tips while she did not. When a customer told her it was because she was a girl, she challenged him. Looking back, Angélica says that experience taught her an enduring lesson: if she wanted something in life, she would need to raise her hand and her voice.
That willingness to speak up would follow her throughout a career spanning multiple industries, international boardrooms, entrepreneurship, and decades of advocacy for women. But some of Angélica's most important lessons came when the life she had built changed dramatically. After one of the darkest periods of her life, she faced a choice between allowing her circumstances to determine her future or choosing herself and her daughters. She chose to rebuild.
Today, Angélica is bringing those lessons into a new chapter through Nowful, a holistic wellness venture centered on reconnecting with yourself through intentional practices. For Angélica, wellness isn't separate from ambition or leadership. She believes taking care of yourself creates the clarity, energy, and focus necessary to lead and live well.
In this conversation, Angélica shares:
- How an experience at 11 years old helped Angélica discover the importance of raising her voice
- What she learned from being one of the youngest and often the only woman in the boardroom
- Why preparation became an essential part of her leadership strategy
- How she rebuilt after one of the most difficult periods of her life
- Why wellness should be viewed as a foundation rather than an afterthought
- How women can embrace ambition without abandoning their well-being
- Why Angélica's definition of success shifted from achievement to who she was becoming
- What decades of gender-equality advocacy have taught her about meaningful organizational change
- Why strategy should remain flexible even when your vision is clear
- How to stop letting age and society's timelines determine what comes next
- Why you never truly start over from scratch when you carry wisdom and experience with you
- The roles vision, integrity, humility, resilience, and adaptability play in leadership
- Why successful women have a responsibility to open doors for those coming behind them
- How small rituals can help us reconnect with ourselves
- Why legacy is ultimately about how you lived and the people you helped along the way
Angélica's story is a reminder that owning your future doesn't mean controlling everything that happens. It means deciding how you will respond, what you will stand for, and who you will choose to become.
