Her Story

About Janet

Dr. Janet Eng, D.O., is a physician and owner of Wellness Alternatives who brings 30 years of experience in emergency medicine to her work in functional and integrative medicine. After decades in emergency care, she began developing her focus on integrative medicine part-time in 2014 while continuing to practice in the emergency department, eventually transitioning to full-time functional and regenerative medicine. Her medical education includes a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, followed by internship and residency training, a fellowship in medical toxicology, and continued advanced training in musculoskeletal ultrasound and Frequency Specific Microcurrent.

At her practice in Okemos, Michigan, Dr. Eng takes a personalized approach to helping patients achieve better health, function, and quality of life. Her areas of focus include regenerative medicine, non-surgical pain management, musculoskeletal ultrasound, injections, Frequency Specific Microcurrent, and functional medicine. She works with patients seeking alternatives to surgery as well as those addressing concerns such as brain fog, fatigue, hormone balance, gut health, nutrition, and overall wellness. By combining multiple treatment modalities, advanced testing, and individualized care, she strives to identify underlying factors and develop comprehensive treatment strategies tailored to each patient.

Dr. Eng attributes her success to perseverance, hard work, a willingness to explore new approaches, and a genuine love for the work she does. She encourages young women entering medicine to ask questions, remain curious, continue learning, and never allow fear or uncertainty to limit their potential. One of the challenges she encounters in her practice is educating patients about the cash-based model, particularly because many of the specialized services she provides are not covered by traditional insurance. Outside of medicine, Dr. Eng has a strong background in athletics, having previously competed in triathlons and ultramarathons. Today, she enjoys supporting her children in their sporting activities and traveling with her family.

Ten minutes with Janet

01What do you attribute your success to?

I attribute my success to perseverance, hard work, and a genuine passion for what I do. I believe in continuing to learn, taking on new challenges, and never being afraid to try again when something does not go as planned. Most importantly, I believe that loving what you do makes all the difference; when you are truly passionate about your work, it becomes easier to stay motivated, overcome obstacles, and continue growing professionally.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

I would encourage young women entering the medical field to never be afraid to ask questions and embrace opportunities to learn. In medicine, there can be pressure to always appear confident and knowledgeable, but learning something new can naturally feel challenging or intimidating. It is important to recognize that asking questions is a strength, not a weakness, and to remain curious throughout your career. Keep learning, trust yourself, and do not allow fear or uncertainty to prevent you from pursuing new opportunities and reaching your full potential.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

One of the biggest challenges in my field is helping patients understand the financial structure of a cash-based practice. Because many of the services I provide are not covered by traditional insurance, it is important to clearly communicate why certain treatments and services require out-of-pocket payment. I see this as an opportunity to educate patients about the value of personalized care and help them make informed decisions about their health and wellness.
