Her Story

About Rebecca

Rebecca Montejano serves as a Nurse Practitioner in Imperial, California, where her specialty is neurology. She sees 20 to 40 patients daily, focusing on conditions from pain to brain disorders, and emphasizes finding root causes through methods like injections rather than long-term opioids due to the opioid epidemic. Montejano earned two Associate's degrees from Arizona Western College, a Bachelor's degree from Grand Canyon University, and a Master's in Nursing from United States University. She also holds an arrhythmia certification with the American Heart Association for reading EKGs and maintains CPR certification. Prior to becoming an RN, she worked for 15 years in a Cardiopulmonary Department and later at a prison facility. Montejano attributes her achievements to the values instilled by her family, a supportive network, accepting help, and trusting herself while raising two children as a single mother. She values honesty, accountability, and ensuring actions match words, and advises aspiring nurses to build confidence, listen to intuition, and apply critical thinking.

Her Interview

Ten minutes with Rebecca

01What do you attribute your success to?

The values I grew up with from my family and having a supportive family got me through, along with accepting help and trusting myself.

02What advice would you give to young women entering your industry?

Nursing is a great field with a lot of watchful learning. Have confidence in yourself, listen to your intuition and that little voice telling you when something is wrong, and use critical thinking to match what's happening in real life to dictate your next steps.

03What are the biggest challenges or opportunities in your field right now?

The greatest challenge is the pain aspect due to the opioid epidemic. We are not long-term opioid prescribers, so it's difficult to get patients to understand that pills are not the treatment for back or neck pain. We focus on finding the root cause through injections or other methods rather than medication.

04What values are most important to you in your work and personal life?

Being honest with others and with myself, accepting help, trusting myself, and ensuring that actions match words with full accountability. These values helped me achieve my goals as a single mother pursuing my career.
